Mildura Weekly : Friday August 22 Vol 8 No 42
NEWS 13 FRIDAY, AUGUST 22, 2014 MILDURA WEEKLY.COM.AU By ALAN ERSKINE VOLUNTEER Sunraysia wild- life carers are working al- most around the clock look- ing after injured, wounded or abandoned native birds and animals, with pelicans caught up in fishing gear by far the most affected species. Carers say hungry peli- cans are swooping on fish caught by anglers near Mil- dura wharf, rowing club lawns, near Lock 11 and at Buronga Caravan Park, with the worst of 32 recent cases being a bird tangled in fish- ing line, with three hooks embedded in its body. Wildlife carers got to the pelican just in time. Fish- ing line and two sinkers wrapped around its huge beak was preventing it taking in food. Gol Gol’s Gwen Wilkin- son, 69, is a lifelong animal lover who has been a volun- teer carer for 20 years, and she says the Sunraysia peli- can rescues in recent months are unprecedented. But while almost all pelican rescues have a happy ending, that’s not the case with many other birds and animals, with some losing limbs, and others having to be euthanised because they are unable to be saved. Some are lucky. One of the best success stories was ‘Woody’ the wood duck, which had lost a webbed foot because of a tight fish- ing line, with the other foot having to be amputated to give the bird any chance of survival. Once both legs had healed, after a lot of TLC, and when the duck had learned to walk on its stumps, it was released back into the wild, and as far as the wildlife car- ers know, is doing OK. Other successful lo- cal rescues include a mag- nificent wedge-tailed eagle, hand-reared from a baby of a few weeks, a goanna with a broken back, numerous echidnas, a variety of owls, possums, emu chicks, a wal- laby and some turtles, and a host of kangaroos of all sizes. “It’s lucky I’m retired... being a volunteer carer is al- most a full-time job,” Gwen said. She is often on the go from 6am to 11pm, just one of seven local volunteer car- ers who work under the guidance of Wildlife Victo- ria, which responds annually to around 55,000 callouts, involving more than 30,000 injured wildlife. Gwen or her fellow car- ers don’t make a big issue of it, but it’s well-known that there are no Government subsidies for their volunteer work, and they willingly use their own vehicles for rescue work and release, and buy food out of their own pock- et. Gwen is helped, and has the full support of husband Terry, who shares her love of animals. • Continued Page 17 The list of injured or abandoned wildlife is growing, with hundreds of cases so far this year in Sunraysia.
