20 RIVERLAND MILDURA WEEKLY FRIDAY, AUGUST 22, 2014 TEENAGER Shannen Ross goes horse-riding just about every day, and is putting in great performances on the show circuit – a just reward for her efforts. The Loxton North rider and her mount ‘Sable’ were in top form at the Wentworth Pre-Show on Sunday, bringing home a multitude of awards. Together they won the Su- preme working hunter; Cham- pion hunter; Reserve Cham- pion led hunter and Reserve Champion senior rider. In the working hunter classes Shannen, 18, had to put the 17.2 hand high ‘Sable’ over one jump from each di- rection, as well as demonstrat- ing walk, trot, canter and hand gallop. The hunter classes re- quired the same gaits, without the jumps. The led hunter had Shan- nen show ‘Sable’ at both walk and trot, while his bones, confirmation and how much ground he covered were also judged. Their results were a little under the previous year at the Wentworth Pre-Show when they took out the Supreme Rider, Supreme Led Exhibit; Supreme working hunter and Champion hunter. However, Shannen was thrilled with the results this year, as ‘Sable’ was out of work for four weeks last year, when she represented SA in the Na- tional Schools event in Perth in October, using a borrowed horse. Shannen represented Lox- ton High School at the State Schools Title and South Aus- tralia at the National Titles – which she rates as her best results to date. “Personally my best would be when I competed in the na- tionals last year,” she said. “I got third in Australia for my rider – fifth the first time ever riding an elementary test.” The elementary test re- quired moving from walk to canter and back without breaking into a trot; traverse, reverse and shoulder-in. She also placed third in the height class for show hunter and fifth in the overall hunter – all on a horse she hadn’t ridden before heading to West Australia for the Nationals. Shannen loves horse rid- ing because she is able to “be as one with such a big ani- mal.” She describes it as “a bit of an adrenalin rush.” “The connection I have with them (horses) is really important.” Shannen said. “I try and ride both of them each day.” Unfortunately, ‘Sable’ has developed a foot abscess since the weekend, and will be out of work for four weeks, mean- ing she will miss the Went- worth Show on August 30 and 31. Last year Shannen also missed the show, as she had appendicitis. • Continued next page Loxton North teenager Shannen Ross loves to go horse riding most days, and at 18 has already represented SA in her chosen sport.
