Mildura Weekly : Friday August 22 Vol 8 No 42
24 SPORT MILDURA WEEKLY FRIDAY, AUGUST 22, 2014 By ADAM LUITJES SUNRAYSIA Academy of Sport athlete Brooke Freckleton has been named captain of Victoria’s Under 15 team that will compete at next week’s School Sport Aus- tralia Volleyball Championships in Adelaide. Having represented Australia in May, this latest achievement caps off a whirlwind season for the 15-year-old. Told of her appointment a fortnight ago, the 188cm star said she was excited to lead her State. “I can’t wait to represent Vic- toria,” Brooke said. “As captain I get to sign the team sheet, toss the coin, and am allowed to speak to the umpire.” Having received silver at last year’s championships, Brooke is confident her team can go one bet- ter this year. “The team is looking good,” she said. “Hopefully we can get gold because that’s what everyone wants.” A member of State league side Western Phantoms, the Year 10 St Joseph’s College student has been regularly traveling to Melbourne for volleyball. Despite the commitment im- peding her social life, Brooke is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve her goal. “Almost every weekend since April I have been in Melbourne playing for the Phantoms, and training with the State team,” Brooke said. “I want to play in America, so it’s a sacrifice I have to make. “I have to thank mum and dad, I don’t think many parents would do what they do.” Having made her State debut last year, Brooke is feeling confi- dent ahead of this year’s tourna- ment. “I’m not nervous, because I know what to expect,” she said. “The intensity, skill and game play is a really high standard. “If I didn’t make the State team last year, I wouldn’t be where I am today.” Shooters set for Tri-State Titles THE Sunraysia Field and Game Inc. group will host the 41st annual Tri-State Championships this weekend, with the event to feature the country’s top clay target shooters. The ‘Simulated Field’ clay target event will incorporate 150 targets, and will act as the sec- ond leg of an interclub event between the Ren- mark-Berri, Sunraysia and Broken Hill Field and Game Clubs. Tomorrow will see shooters contest the first 100 targets from 9am, with the remaining 50 targets to be shot on Sunday. Last year’s championships saw more than 100 shooters take part, with similar numbers expected this year. All entrants will be gunning for the coveted ‘High Gun’ award for the best shooter over the weekend, with a wide variety of targets to be set over two, 25-target layouts. Classes will include Veterans, Ladies and Juniors, with entry across both days $80 for open, $40 for Veterans and Ladies, and $40 for juniors. More information is available by contact- ing 0437 560 584. Meringur to recognise indigenous contributions MERINGUR Football Netball Club will host its second annual ‘Indigenous Recognition’ game tomorrow, with the match to take place at Mildura’s Sarah Oval. The game – which will also act as the club’s final home game of the season – is held in rec- ognition of the support and contribution of the indigenous players and community to the club. Players will wear a special jumper for the game, which will be played against Euston. Play will get underway from 2.30pm, with Meringur netballers to also take part in the day, with games to start from 1pm.
