FEATURE 27 FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2014 MILDURA WEEKLY.COM.AU community heroes SURGERY umpires or refs, no matter what the sport, to cop abuse...either But the truth is, sport would be lost without them. Now it’s time Dental Community Hero award, so this week we say... fellow friends in white playing netball at 55), the quiet achiever played in dozens of grand finals, but wracks her brain to re- member if she ever shared a pre- miership with team-mates at sen- ior level. She does remember being runner-up at least 13 times! When you dig further into her sports career, you find that Marlene has at least one best and fairest award to her credit, a prestigious junior Sunraysia league netball best and fairest award named after her, and she has been honoured with life membership at six Sun- raysia sporting clubs, the first in 1995, and the most recent in 2012. In 2008 she was the first woman to be awarded life membership of the Sunraysia Football Netball League. And her community contribu- tion isn’t just confined to sport. Over the years Marlene has served on various committees, including the Sunraysia Jazz, Wine and Food festival, Sunraysia Tourism and North-West Vic- torian Wines, and was among volunteers who travelled to Adelaide and Melbourne for Sunraysia food and wine promotional events. Sport is obviously her first love, prob- ably more of an obsession, and the good news is that Marlene has no inten- tion of giving away umpiring in the fore- seeable future. Or coaching for that mat- ter. She gets immense satisfaction from coaching ‘her’ juniors, and delights at the improvement they show on the court, or with the whistle. In fact, one of her stu- dents has even topped Marlene’s umpir- ing status, having achieved Australian ‘B’ level, the third highest in the nation (Marlene coaches at ‘C’ level). Her junior coaching during winter - under 11’s and under 17’s - takes up two nights a week, and in the ‘off’ season Mar- lene spends most weekends coaching the under 9’s and under 11’s. Any spare time she gets is usually spent watching high-level netball, either on TV or at live games, and Marlene is ex- citedly looking forward to the 2015 world netball titles in Sydney. She also likes to catch up with her six surviving siblings and their families (a brother, Syd, was just 21 when he was killed in a car crash in central Victoria). All but one of the families live in Sunraysia. The other is in Adelaide. It’s hard to believe this affable sports- lover has crammed so much into her adult life, especially considering she likes to spend time with husband Terrence and 34-year-old daughter Stacey, and has had a full working career... starting at Shillidays Mil- dura, followed by five years in Melbourne, back to Shil- lidays, then two years at Stanley Wines, 20 more at Mildura Vineyard Winery at Irymple, with the past four years at Hip Pocket Work- wear in 10th Street. Finally resigned (reluc- tantly), to having her story told, Marlene hopes it will encourage more youngsters to follow in her footsteps, and combine their chosen sport with umpiring and/or coaching. “You have your mo- ments at senior level...I’ve had to send some players - especially males - to the sin bin a few times to cool down, but over- all it’s been extremely satisfying, reward- ing and enjoyable,” she said. “Like most sports, we need all the umpires we can get.” • FOOTNOTE: Marlene is the second of our Community Heroes.
