SPORT 31 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2014 MILDURAWEEKLY.COM.AU By ADAM LUITJES MILDURA Lady Heat coach Ang Wall has capped off a successful second season at the helm by being named Big V Basketball Division One Women’s Coach of the Year. Acknowledged at last month’s Big V Basketball awards dinner, the 37-year-old said she was “shocked” to re- ceive the coveted award. Having missed the finals in 2013, Ang this year steered the Lady Heat to a 13-7 season, which ended in a grand final loss to Geelong. “It’s a great honour as there are a lot of good coaches in Division One,” she said. “It’s a nice personal accolade, but I would have preferred a championship. “The award is voted by coaches and captains in our division, so that means more to me than the Coach of the Year title.” While named ahead of outgoing Geelong coach Dar- ren Busuttil, Ang said the achievement didn’t ease the grand final heartache. “It still sits bad with me that we lost,” she said. “It’s always nice being picked amongst your peers for doing a good job, but nothing makes up for losing a champion- ship.” Having recently signed on for 2015, Ang says she’s excited to have another season with the team. “It was an easy decision to make, mainly because of the juniors that are com- ing through,” she said. “We worked with them last year, and noticed a lot of improve- ment in their game, and I wanted another year to push them.” With star import Sarina Simmons unlikely to play for Mildura in 2015, Ang said finding a replacement was a top priority. “Signing our import will be hard this year, because it’s not very often you come across a player like Sarina,” she said. “Looking at her Prague sched- ule she won’t get back here in time, and we don’t have the depth to go without an import for four weeks. “We have to scout a good import, and make sure we get an athletic big because we won’t have Sam Zoch, who is a big loss.” Reflecting on her past two seasons as coach, Ang says she’s enjoyed the role. “If there is one thing I’d back myself on, that would be my basketball knowledge,” she said. “I don’t spruik about my game, but after playing under so many good coaches and playing at such high levels, you learn things that can’t be taught from a book. “When it comes to games and trying to decide what of- fences and defences to run, I think I’m pretty switched on.” Also doing well for the Lady Heat at the awards night were Simmons and Vanessa Power, who were both named in the Big V Basketball Divi- sion One Women’s All-Star Five.
