SPORT 31 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2014 MILDURAWEEKLY.COM.AU Sunraysia Darts throws an October tournament By ADAM LUITJES DARTS players from across the country are set to flock to the Merbein Citizens Club this weekend for the 2014 Sunraysia Darts League Oc- tober Tournament. Between 80 and 100 players will compete in the annual doubles and singles competition, with one of Australia’s best players Ray- mond O’Donnell expected to attend for the third time. Usually held two weeks earlier, the competition was rescheduled as it clashed with a major tournament in Broken Hill. SDL veteran Peter May- nard is hoping a change in schedule will entice more players to the event. “I’m hoping to see more numbers this year than last,” he said. “Speaking to a few guys they reckon there will be 15 to 20 players travelling from Shepparton, so that’s some we have never had be- fore. “We’ll have to wait and see what happens, but we should have a good turn out.” With only $3000 total prize money on offer, Peter said participants entered the competition for other rea- sons. “People come here for the love of the sport, nothing else,” he said. “Would you play all day Saturday to win only $200? “It’s not a lot of money, and the $3000 has been on offer for roughly 10 years, so it’s time we looked at bump- ing it up.” With children and part- ners allowed in the playing area, Peter says the competi- tion has a great family atmo- sphere. “It’s a good family week- end with the kids running around,” he said. “We set up a dart board for the them, so it’s definitely more family orientated than most sports.” Having played darts lo- cally for 45 years, Peter says the sport is alive and well in the region. “I think it has gotten bet- ter,” he said. “There are a number of youngsters who are taking their darts seri- ously. “They are also putting in now too, before they would sit back and let us oldies do everything, but now they are really helping out.” Next year’s SDL Octo- ber Tournament will coin- cide with the league’s 50th anniversary with planning already underway for the event.
