Mildura Weekly : Friday October 31 2014 Vol 8 No 52
NEWS 13 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2014 MILDURAWEEKLY.COM.AU MEMBERS of the Ratbagz Theatre Group will return to the stage this Christmas period, to showcase its take on an iconic television classic – Gilligan’s Island. Marking the 11th Christmas theatre restaurant show the Rat- bagz Group has held in the re- gion, Gilligan’s Island is one of the world’s most syndicated sitcoms, premiering 50 years ago. As with most Ratbagz perfor- mances, audiences will be treated to slightly different versions of their favourite Gilligan’s Island characters, with director, writer and Ratbagz founder Rob Syme the brainchild behind the revamped script. “My cast members actually challenged me to write a send up of Gilligan’s Island – to ABBA mu- sic,” he said. “I must say it took me a while, but eventually I was able to come up with a very involved and elaborate plot. “Essentially the castaways be- gin disappearing one by one only to return talking Swedish, wearing a satin jumpsuit and sporting a 1970s hairdo. “Somehow they get ‘ABBA-fied.’ “We have also incorporated many other iconic influences in the show that we thoroughly send up, including television shows like ‘Lost,’ ‘Survivor,’ ‘Castaway’ and ‘The X Factor.’” Audiences will also be treat- ed to a three-course meal on the night, with bar facilities available. “As with past shows we encour- age audiences to come dressed up for the occasion,” Rob said. “This can include attending as their fa- vourite Gilligan’s Island character or an ABBA member – it all adds to the party atmosphere.” Ratbagz will open their new show at the Sacred Heart Hall on November 22, with shows to fol- low at the Gol Gol Hotel on No- vember 28, and back at the Sacred Heart Hall on November 29. The show will then move to the Quality Hotel Mildura Grand on December 6, 12 and 13, with tick- ets $69. All performances will get un- derway 7pm, with more informa- tion, or bookings, available by contacting the Mildura Tourist Information and Booking Centre on 5018 8380, the Gol Gol Hotel on 5024 8492 or the Quality Hotel Mildura Grand on 5023 0511. THE official opening this week of Fishers new $6.5million su- permarket at Irymple marks yet another giant leap forward in convenience and competitive shopping for Sunraysia residents and visitors. And no-one was happier than Fishers managing director Alan Fisher, cut a celebratory cake that was shaped after the new store, and decorated accordingly. About 200 people attended the opening. The new store covers about 2000 square metres, roughly the same as Fishers Merbein, and includes a drive-through bottle shop, rental space for retail out- lets, and extensive paved and sail-covered car park. The new store opened its doors to customers this morn- ing.
