Mildura Weekly : Friday November 7 2014 Vol 9 No 1
NEWS 03 FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2014 MILDURAWEEKLY.COM.AU By BEN PISCIONERI MILDURA candidates in this month’s Victorian Election will have a chance to convince the community why they should be voted in at a candidates forum in Mildura in two weeks’ time. Organised by a group led by prominent Sunraysia irrigator spokesman Greg Milner, the fo- rum will be held on November 19 and initially tackle four key issues before being opened up to the floor. Mr Milner said yesterday the idea behind holding the forum was to allow the community to learn more about the candi- dates and how they perform. “We want the candidates to take our vote seriously,” he said. “They’re asking us for our vote and support, well, this is a chance for the public to see how they perform, particularly if there is any pressure or ques- tions without notice, how they respond and their knowledge on some of the key issues fac- ing this district. “It’s also an opportunity for the public to ask their own questions of the candidates. “To my mind, it shouldn’t be just ‘we want your vote and we’ll forget about you for four years’. Politicians need to deliv- er and this is a chance to hold them accountable.” Mr Milner said the forum would start by asking candi- dates to speak for a specified time on their vision for the dis- trict. This would be followed by candidates’ responses to ques- tions on four key issues - water, health, education and trans- port, followed by an open mic session, where the public can ask their own questions. Mr Milner said the forum, which would be held at the Al- fred Deakin Centre Benetook Room, was open to the public, and he encouraged people to attend. “This is a forum we’ve fund- ed ourselves and we’re hoping as many people as possible take advantage of this opportunity,” he said. Mr Milner anticipates the forum will get under way at 7.30pm, but stressed that final details will be well publicised closer to the date. Official invitations will go out to candidates in coming days. * For more Victorian Election news see Page 5 Candidates urged to take votes seriously • Forum organiser and prominent Sunraysia irrigator Greg Milner. “They’re asking us for our vote and support, well, this is a chance for the public to see how they perform,” - Greg Milner. Mildura Recreation Reserve revamp plans RESURFACING of Number 1 Oval, more net- ball courts and new change rooms for netball and junior football players are among key rec- ommendations contained in a revamped mas- ter plan for the Mildura Recreation Reserve. The Reserve has been subject to several plans and studies over the past decade in the wake of increasing pressure from user groups, including football, netball and cricket clubs and harness racing. A master plan released several years ago contained plans for an expanded Mildura Har- ness Racing track as well as relocation of one of the football teams that call Number 1 oval home. However Harness Racing Victoria plans to upgrade the existing track, rather than increase its size, as well as ongoing pressure on Reserve facilities from user groups gave rise to the cur- rent revised draft. Mildura Rural City Council Recreation and Sport portfolio Councillor Mark Eckel said these user groups have provided signifi- cant input into the plan that was released this week. “Development of the revised master plan has largely been driven by a reference group consisting of representatives from the Re- serve’s regular user groups,” Cr Eckel said. “A comprehensive consultation process saw some vigorous and positive discussions. “Fifteen separate sporting and community groups were represented and it really reiter- ated to us how important this facility is to the local recreation community.” The draft plan details almost $3.6million worth of improvements over the next five years including: - new change facilities for netball and ju- nior football. - more netball courts. - resurfacing of the playing surface inside the harness racing track. - conversion of raw water for irrigation purposes. - conversion of old kiosks under the main grandstand to change facilities. - development of a traffic management plan. - improvements to lighting and security throughout the Reserve. Other suggestions, such as a desire to see a playground on site, will also be included in the plan. The draft report will be out for public com- ment until Thursday, November 27.
