Mildura Weekly : Friday November 28 2014 Vol 9 No 4
NEWS 21 FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2014 MILDURAWEEKLY.COM.AU AUSTRALIA Day is a time when Australians across the country celebrate our great nation. And while a day that is already filled with barbecues, beer and celebration, the Vic- torian Australia Day Commit- tee is providing those Mildura residents who also celebrate a birthday on January 26 with even more reason to celebrate by launching ‘The 26ers Club.’ A free and exclusive club for “extra special Victorians,” Mildura Mayor Glenn Milne said the Australia Day Com- mittee estimated that only a handful of people living in the region were eligible to sign up. “Records indicate there are a few residents living in our region who celebrate their birthday on the same day we celebrate this great country,” he said. “This is a fun way to get involved in Australia Day, and is obviously only open to a very select group of Aussies. “Joining The 26ers Club is a simple process. You just need to send in proof of your date of birth and evidence that you live in Victoria – and you’re in.” Members of The 26ers Club receive a birthday card and an invitation to partici- pate in the People’s Parade and Cake Cutting ceremony on Australia Day in Mel- bourne each year, with plans also in place to host a birth- day ‘party’ at Mildura’s Austra- lia Day activities held annu- ally at Nowingi Place. “If we can track down the lucky 26ers locally then it would be great to include them in our celebrations,” Cr Milne said. More information about The 26ers Club is available by visiting www.australiaday. vic.gov.au, with nomina- tion forms for the Australia Day Awards available from Council’s website: www.mil- dura.vic.gov.au/Australia_ Day_2015_Awards, or from Council’s service centres. ‘26ers Club’ for those born on Australia Day • Potential ‘26ers Club’ member Denis Jewell, left, with Mildura Rural City Council’s Australia Day organiser Guy Couzner.
