Mildura Weekly : Friday December 5 2014 Vol 9 No 5
46 MOTORING MILDURA WEEKLY FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2014 LAND speed records appear to be an almost irresistible lure for man-kind. It seems that just as one record is broken another project is launched to push the limits even higher. The latest project destined to break the existing 1229km/h record has been dubbed the Bloodhound SSC racer, and it’s fuelled, quite literally, by a conventional internal combustion engine in the form of a supercharged Jaguar V8 powerplant. The Bloodhound will be propelled to supersonic speeds by a hybrid rocket/jet configuration producing a staggering 75,200lbf of power. That’s eight times more than all the cars on the Formula 1 starting grid. Not surprisingly, a power combination capable of producing those figures needs a lot of fuel, which is where Jaguar’s supercharged 5.0-litre V8 motor enters the equation. The motor is taken out of Jag’s F-Type and will pump 800 litres of High Test Peroxide to the rocket in just 20 seconds. To put it in basic terms, it’s essentially a V8-powered fuel pump! The Bloodhound team will make their latest attempt on the 1229km/h land speed record next year before aiming to break the 1000mp/h (1609km/h) barrier in the future. To put those speeds into perspective, the speed of sound at sea level is about 1225km/h. The existing land speed record was set in 1997 with Andy Green behind the wheel. Andy will again be at the controls for the Bloodhound SSC’s attempt next year. Next year’s land speed record attempt won’t be Jaguar’s first association with the practice. The British marque has been involved for decades, including the current record holder, the Thrust SSC. For those who may scoff at the notion that the Bloodhound and many of its land speed record predecessors are even classified as ‘vehicles’ given they’re almost more jet than car, the FIA’s regulations for land speed record attempts stipulate that a ‘vehicle’ is: ‘...propelled by its own means in constant contact wit the ground (or ice), either directly by mechanical means or indirectly by ground effect, and the motive power and steering system of which are constantly and entirely controlled by a driver on board the vehicle.’ In order for a vehicle to have made an official record attempt, its speed is taken as the average of two passes.
