Mildura Weekly : Friday January 30 Vol 9 No 12 2015
NEWS 19 FRIDAY, JANUARY 30, 2015 MILDURAWEEKLY.COM.AU By Rex Ellis with GRANT MAYNARD RECENT heavy rains in northern South Australia prompted media reports that Lake Eyre was filling up. That is not the case, at least not yet, according to the Mildura Weekly’s outback cor- respondent, adventurer, au- thor and respected bushman Rex Ellis. In an email to the news- paper this week, Rex revealed that while Lake Eyre might look like it is a lake once more, it is mostly an illusion. “Lake Eyre is completely covered with water, but that is due to the fact that more than 100 millimetres (4 inch- es) fell directly on it. Most of the top half of the lake bed would be covered with just 12mm (or half an inch of water), getting a little deeper towards the bottom end.” Rex revealed that Lake Eyre “like all large SA salt lakes, shelves to the south.” The media reported that water was running into the lake – a fact Rex was able to confirm, but added it was true “insofar as the creeks on the west side of the Lake, and also the larger Macum- ba River is running water into the Warburton, at its junction 20-odd kilometres upriver from the Warburton mouth.” “The bottom channels of the Warburton and Cooper Rivers received up to 200mm (eight inches) of rain, which would part fill some water- holes from local run off, as well as saturate the sandy channels,” he said. “But, for Lake Eyre to begin filling, western Queensland, where the head waters of these rivers began, needs a big dump of rain.” Rex revealed that Lake Eyre has only been truly full once in white man’s memory – in 1974 when an expedi- tion I was part of managed to cross it from north to south by boat. “In other words, the drought there (western Queensland) will need to break...and there are a cou- ple of months to go before the monsoonal rains are around to make this happen. “I am keeping my fingers crossed because I am looking forward to another season of following the floods down to Lake Eyre in my boats. This is the only country in the world where such adventures are possible!” Rex added: “Even if big rain doesn’t fall in western Queensland, the big rain that has already fallen in SA is a massive ecological boost, and guarantees good times for pastoralists and tourist operators. “The rain that has already fallen on Lake Eyre may mean postponing the attempted crossing for our ‘Walking SA Salt Lakes for Endangered Bird Recovery Project’ – an initiative, Rex said, that regu- lar Mildura Weekly readers would be familiar with. “But it really doesn’t mat- ter,” Rex added, “because I am predicting the lake will be dry enough again very soon.” Media telling ‘porky pies’ says our Rex...
