36 sport MILDURA WEEKLY FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2015 New post for our Jo THE best young triathletes in Australia, the cream of the Victorian and Australian Insti- tutes of Sport, will be in Eus- ton at the end of February to celebrate the 10th annual Eus- ton Club Resort Grand Prix Triathlon. The visitors, hoping to achieve future success at Commonwealth or Olympic level, will go head to head with the best Sunraysia swim- mers, bike riders and runners, in a race recognised as one of toughest in the nation. Long-time race director John Fleming is expecting this year’s event to be the best yet, and is encouraging members of the public to attend either or both of the big events, Sat- urday and Sunday, February 28 and March 1, to see some of the best athletes in Austra- lia. The 2.5 kilometre river swim, from the Robinvale bridge to the Euston Club on the Saturday afternoon, is once again sponsored by lo- cally-owned Fishers IGA, with the big guns in the elite class competing for $12,000 in prize money on the Sunday, with main sponsorship from the Euston Club. The big race format sees athletes swim 700 metres, ride for eight kilome- tres, run for 2kms, get back on their bikes for another 8km ride, and end with a punish- ing 2km run. Mildura-based Tasco In- land is another major spon- sor, and the weekend will be heavily supported by the Euston/Robinvale Football Club sporting communities, who will supply event person- nel and marshals, as well as race entrants. John said all racing would either start from, be centred on, or end at the Euston Club resort, with the Murray River venue described as arguably the best backdrop for an event of this kind anywhere in Aus- tralia. He said event organ- isers were thrilled to attract such an elite field of competi- tors to Euston. “This weekend caters for the newer athlete wishing to race for the first time, with a separate race for age group tri- athletes,” he said. “The teams competition will also have strong fields, with several local teams racing for the $300, $200 and $100 cash prizes.” Euston Club Resort Presi- dent Toni Ganci said the club was thrilled to host the 10th Anniversary Grand Prix Tri- athlon and Fishers IGA Super- market Swim weekend. “The quality of the event exceeds our expectations ev- ery year, it just keeps get bet- ter,” he said. “We have hosted some amazing athletes in the last 10 years, and hopefully this year we will continue to introduce our next crop of hopefuls.” John said the event has a history of looking after age group entries, who have their own race, with a chance to share in $3000 worth of Tasco fuel vouchers. The Fishers IGA 2.5km river swim has a total of $3000 on offer. “Apart from amazing sup- port from Ray Jones and his committee at the Euston Club over the past decade, it is fan- tastic that the sporting com- munities of Euston and Rob- invale are prepared to lend a hand to assist the Coomealla Triathlon Club in presenting these events.” John said. There is still time for Sun- raysia athletes to enter. Race details and competitor book- lets can be viewed online at www.coomeallatriclub.com. MILDURA’S Olympic Park Speedway has played host to an exciting second round of the Procoat – 2015 FIM Oce- ania Sidecar Championships, with the team of Darrin Tre- loar and Blake Cox coming out on top. The win sees the pair move comfortably to the top of the Oceania Championship table, with the final round to take place in Kurri Kurri, NSW, to- morrow night.
