Mildura Weekly : Friday February 20 2015 Vol 9 no 15
14 NEWS MILDURA WEEKLY FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2015 MILDURA tourism operators have embraced new cycling tourism op- portunities, with 14 officially-en- dorsed Cycle Friendly Businesses now operating across the region. The cycling push has been ini- tiated by Mildura Tourism, which established criteria and individu- ally followed up the endorsement of identified businesses. “Four months ago, cycling tour- ism in Mildura was almost non-ex- istent,” Mildura Tourism CEO, Rod Trowbridge, said. “To now have 14 operators on board as Cycle Friend- ly Businesses is not only a great re- sult, it also shows there are many local operators willing to try new things to bring more activity, excite- ment and visitors into Mildura. “It is hoped that CFB numbers will continue to increase through- out the year, and with our flat ter- rain, Mediterranean climate, beau- tiful scenery along the Murray River and surrounds, plus plenty of life- style attractions, Mildura and Wen- tworth are perfect destinations for cyclists to enjoy.” Mr Trowbridge said that while tourists travelling to the region may not have cycling as their sole reason to visit, it was an activity “gaining popularity,” and was also well- known for its ability to generate visitor and economic growth. “Our local Cycle Friendly Busi- nesses include a winery, numerous accommodation providers includ- ing hotels, motels, apartments and caravan parks, botanic gardens, a café/gallery and a day spa,” he said. “The businesses span Mildura, Red Cliffs and Wentworth, with the potential for the group to grow rap- idly over coming months.” Mr Trowbridge said elements that made select operators ‘cycle- friendly’ included offering compli- mentary water to cyclists, having adequate bike parking, storage or complimentary bike locks to secure bikes, providing information on lo- cal rides and locations of bike hire outlets and bicycle shops. “One accommodation provider has taken an extra step by purchas- ing their own bikes for guests to hire, as well as creating a package to promote the new addition,” he said. “Businesses report that becom- ing cycle friendly has been a simple and low-cost venture, with much revolving around those businesses accurately assessing a new opportu- nity and combining beliefs with a welcoming attitude and willingness to assist people where required.” The development of the region’s Cycle Friendly Businesses is ‘per- fect timing’ according to Mr Trow- bridge, with the initiative’s launch coinciding with the release of the February/March issue of Australia’s most widely read cycling publica- tion Ride On magazine. This month’s issue, which will reach an estimated 60,000 readers, features a five-page section on cy- cling in Mildura. “For the Mildura region, these businesses are now opening up many opportunities for cyclists of all ages and fitness levels – from older couples or families simply wanting scenic and enjoyable rides, to the keener competition and road cyclists,” Mr Trowbridge said. “It’s another way to promote Mildura as a destination to wider markets, encouraging visitors as well as locals to participate in a healthy and active lifestyle while also enjoying our diverse and popu- lar attractions.” Mildura riding high on bicycle tourism • PEDAL POWER: Karen and Wayne Billett, from the 7th Street Motel – one of the 14 businesses to embrace Mildura Tourism’s new ‘Cycle Friendly Businesses’ initiative.
