30 SPORT MILDURA WEEKLY FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2015 MILDURA WEEKLY FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2015 Sunraysia sports stars shine at awards night SUNRAYSIA’S most talented and dedicated athletes filled Club Da Vin- ci last Friday for the Mal- lee Sports As- sembly’s night of nights, the Northern Mal- lee Sports Star Awards. Taking home the highest honour was World – and multiple Australian – cham- pion wakeboarder Bec Gange, ABOVE, who was named Northern Mallee Sports Star of the Year. Other winners included swimmer Tub- by Ramsay (Master Athlete of the Year), taekwondo athlete Ryan Samaras (Junior Encouragement), St Joseph’s College T20 cricket team (Team of the Year), Jaimon Lid- sey and Declyn Adams Junior Motorcycle Team (Junior Team of the Year), Mildura District Ski Club (Club of the Year), bas- ketball coach Ian Sandiman (Coach of the Year), NRL Game Development Officer Mar- tin O’Rourke (Administrator of the Year), soccer player Cosimo Cirillo (Athlete with a Disability), soccer player Melissa Bailey (Aboriginal Sportsperson of the Year), Sun- raysia Rugby League president Ted Guinea (Volunteer of the Year) and cricketer Peter Cox (Northern Mallee Sports Hall of Fame). The Sporting Blues School Program award winners were Philippa Patterson (diving), Hayley Crowhurst (hockey), Gary Milsom (touch footy), Brodie Carrigan (hockey), Rinaldo Pender, Jayden Curtis, Madeleine Williams and Asare Amoafo (athletics). LOCAL rising tennis star Zac Robinson’s ambi- tion to play professionally has been given a huge boost, with the 17-year-old awarded the Lancas- ter Scholarship. Named after former local Phil Lancaster – who now resides in Oklahoma City with his family – the scholarship will provide Zac with an all expenses paid trip to further his career in America. The scholarship is offered through the Mil- dura Lawn Tennis Club’s Talent Identification Program. Leaving in July, Zac’s three weeks will be spent touring prospective colleges, while also spending time with the Lancasters. Trying out alongside 15 other local hopefuls last weekend, Zac was put through his paces by former MLTC coach Justin Raiti, who himself spent time playing tennis in America. Selected on his tennis ability, time manage- ment skills, attitude and academic application, Zac said he was “relieved” when his name was called out. “I feel honoured to be given this opportunity, and now I want to make the most of it,” he said. “I haven’t been to America before, plus I get to check out all the colleges, which will be really good. “I have been in talks with St Edward’s College in Austin, Texas, so this will definitely help gener- ate more contacts.” Currently ranked 650th in Australia (open men’s), Zac has enjoyed a breakout year on the tennis court. Along with strong performances at Victorian and interstate tournaments, the Year 12 St Joseph’s College student recently won the Red Cliffs Open and MLTC men’s and junior championships. Gaining a wildcard entry at last year’s Mildura Pro Tour Event, Zac said he was hoping to be se- lected again.
