Photo: PAUL MENSCH By ADAM LUITJES THERE will be no love lost in to- night’s Sunraysia Cricket Associa- tion women’s grand final, as cross- town rivals Irymple and Mildura Settlers go head-to-head at Sarah Oval. Having experienced thrilling semi-final victories last week, both teams are full of confidence head- ing into tonight’s decider. After overcoming reigning pre- miers Nichols Point by two runs to secure their maiden grand final birth, Mildura Settlers vice-captain Laura Priestley says her team is ready to go. “Last time we played Nichols Point we were bowled out for 21,” Laura said. “So to make 144 against them was pretty impressive.” Having been in the league for only two seasons, Laura says it will mean a lot if the club can get over the line tonight. “I think it will attract more girls to come and play,” she said. “We have so many juniors in our team, and I think that’s what has made us stronger because they have come along in leaps and bounds. “Us older players are just doing our best to stick around and help them out.” A former Swallow, the 29-year- old wicketkeeper is expecting a heated contest when she faces her old team. “We have developed a rivalry with Irymple this season,” Laura said. “It’s going to be a very tense game, and anyone could win be- cause we have been even all sea- son.” Irymple captain Renee Whit- ton says her team is “pumped” after defeating ladder leaders Coo- mealla Wentworth by four runs last Friday night. “It is pretty big for Irymple,” Renee said. “It is the first time we have gotten to the grand final, so there are a few nerves, but we are raring to go.” Despite experiencing an incon- sistent season, Renee believes the Swallows have hit form at the right time. “I think we have proven to each other that we can do it,” the 30-year-old all-rounder said. “We are working really well as a team at the moment.” An eight-year veteran of the women’s 20-over competition, Re- nee says if Irymple are to win they must perform well in the field. “You have to keep your field tight, and stop those boundaries and quick singles,” she said. “If we can keep Setts to under 100 that would be nice.” Tonight’s grand final action starts at 5.30pm. ‘Underdogs’ face off in SCA women’s grand final Heat sizzle in Traralgon MILDURA’S Junior Heat Under 16 girls team have returned home as Division Two champions from last weekend’s State Bas- ketball Titles in Traral- gon.
