SPORT 33 FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2015 MILDURAWEEKLY.COM.AU By ADAM LUITJES LOCAL teenager Jackson Rich- man is counting down the days until he can represent Nichols Point Cricket Club’s First Divi- sion side in the Sunraysia Crick- et Association. The Pointers are set to un- veil their inaugural Firsts team next season, and the 16-year-old wicketkeeper/batsmen can’t wait to test himself in the region’s best league. “We are really looking for- ward to having a side next year,” Jackson said. “It’s going to be tough, but hopefully four or five years down the track we will be com- petitive.” A consistent performer at Under 16’s and Second Divi- sion level, the Year 11 St Joseph’s College student has proven he’s ready for the lift in intensity. In the Round 12 Second Division clash against Irymple, Jackson registered his maiden century in his side’s 67-run vic- tory. “It has taken a while to sink in,” Jackson said. “I was very happy with it, and it was good to help get the team over the line. “It was great that I could play my role for the team, and help them push for a finals spot.” Opening the batting, Jackson displayed immense concentration to bat through his side’s entire in- nings (64 overs). “It was very hot which was the main challenge,” Jackson said. “I started off slow and couldn’t build a partnership with anyone, but I knew it was important to bat through the innings. “It was good to get on the front foot and attack the bowling. When I got to tea I was in the 70s, and as soon as I got my hundred we de- clared.” Living just down the road from the Nichols Point Rec- reation Reserve, Jackson was only eight when he played his first game for the Pointers. Showing plenty of poten- tial, it wasn’t long before the talented teen was progressing through the senior ranks. “I started playing Fourth Division four seasons ago,” Jackson said. “Two seasons ago I played my first game of Seconds – whenIwas13–andwas lucky enough to make a 50.” A self-confessed cricket tragic, Jackson spends his Sat- urday mornings captaining the Nichols Point/Merbein South Under 16’s team, while the afternoons are spent play- ing senior cricket. A regular Mallee Murray Bulls representative, Jackson is hoping to play metropoli- tan cricket in the future. “I would like to go to Ad- elaide or Melbourne to play premier league cricket,” Jack- son said. “I need to keep making scores down here and hopefully I’ll get recognised.” • A TON OF TALENT: Nichols Point Cricket Club’s Jackson Richman showed he is ready to play First Division next season, after recording his maiden century in a recent Second Division game. Talented cricket young gun has a point to prove THE Mildura Sidecar Masters meeting scheduled for tomor- row night has been cancelled by Olympic Park promoters. At a meeting held earlier this week, Mildura Motor Cycle Club members were advised that en- try numbers for the event were not sufficient enough to put to- gether a strong program, particu- larly due to a high attrition rate from the recent Oceania Sidecar Championships and recent Grand Slam events. “It’s a pity that numbers were down for the Masters, however the club acknowledges that many side- car teams have been under pressure during the international oceania se- ries which concluded just a fortnight ago,” Mildura Motor Cycle Club President, Gavin Sedgmen, said. “Our local rider, Warren Mon- son, had blown a motor at Mildura, which cost him heavily in the three- round series. “This club must promote meet- ings of a suitable standard for our valued patrons, and this one was not shaping up too well. “Attrition has been high and the guys are getting machines ready for the Sidecar Speccy here at Mildura in a fortnight, the Grand Slam events and then the Australian Sidecar Championships to be held in Alice Springs over the Easter weekend.” Since the scheduling of the Sidecar Masters event early in the year, the Mildura Club has noted that there were two other strong local motorsport attrac- tions scheduled for the same weekend, with Timmis Speed- way hosting a Sprintcar show and Sunraysia Drag Racing As- sociation also hosting an event tomorrow night. “All motorsport clubs try not to work against each other, however, as all clubs have centralised control- ling bodies, sometimes a clash is un- avoidable,” Sedgmen said. “Nominations are very strong for our 38th annual Sidecar Spectacu- lar, which will be held on Sunday, March 8, so we are now concentrat- ing on that meeting. “The Sidecar Spectacular will bring a wonderful season to a close ahead of the National Titles.
