12 NEWS MILDURA WEEKLY FRIDAY, MARCH 27, 2015 THE Mildura APCO fuel and food outlet in Deakin Avenue has won its second successive franchise of the year award, from 23 company stores across Victoria and border ar- eas of NSW. Mildura franchisee Askin Erdogan said the win was a reflection on the 24/7 outlet’s competitive prices, and staff commitment. APCO Mildura is now in its fifth year of op- eration. Win, win for Mildura’s APCO HEALTHY eating and active behav- iours among infants is becoming more important, according to Sunraysia Community Health Services, with re- cent research showing that unhealthy weight in early childhood is deter- mined in part by eating, physical activ- ity and sedentary behaviours learned in the first five years of life. SCHS representatives have sought to address the issue locally through participation in the Deakin University- developed ‘Infant program’ – a six ses- sion initiative delivered to parents and caregivers of young infants over the first 18 months. The Infant program aims to pro- mote healthy eating and active behav- iours in parents and their children, with emphasis placed on preparing for the common challenges of establish- ing healthy eating and activity patterns in the first years of an infant’s life. The program also provides parents with the skills, knowledge and support to nurture the development of healthy behaviours in their child. Locally the program is run in partnership with Healthy Together Mildura, Mildura Rural City Council Maternal and Child Health and the Sunraysia Community Health Services Allied Health Team Dieticians. Since commencing in October 2013, 165 parents have enrolled in the program, with more than 20 group programs now running. “It has been great to be able to see the children develop over the past 18 months, and to work with parents on the day-to-day issues they face,” SCHS Infant facilitator Danika Carty said. Recent research has shown that by 18 months of age, most Australian children are consuming energy-dense foods and drinks on a daily basis. These foods are replacing fruit, veg- etables, water, milk and other essential foods, with many parents finding the early years of a child’s life busy and often challenging, describing it as a time when they are overwhelmed with information. First-time mother, and Infant pro- gram participant Lauren Joyce said she enjoyed learning from others taking part in the initiative. SCHS is encouraging those who are not first-time mothers and who have a child aged up to 18 months to attend the Infant program, with more information available by contacting Angelina Cua on 5022 5444. Parents encouraged to promote healthy habits for infants • The SCHS infant program aims to promote healthy eating and active behaviours in parents and their children. • Do you love books and reading? • Would like to share that love of books with Primary School children? • Do you want to help a child discover the fun of learning through play? Then come and discover the benefits of volunteering with Reading To Go Mentoring program. We are seeking volunteers to support students from a Refugee background in their reading and play skills. Many of these students have lower literacy levels than their mainstream peers and often parents lack confidence in their ability to support their children’s reading and literacy at home. Volunteers support students to engage and build confidence through fun activities that promote language development and literacy skills. This may include reading books, telling stories, visiting the Mildura Library and other activities based on the students interests. Comprehensive training and ongoing support will be provided to all volunteers. Volunteers only need to commit to approximately 1.5 hours per week for nine months (excluding school holidays). Volunteers must be willing to undergo Working with Children and Police Checks. Reading To Go Training will be held in April 2015 If you are interested in volunteering or would like further information please contact Danielle Mazza - Reading To Go Coordinator on 03 5021 7480 or email dmazza@malleefamilycare.com.au This Out of School Hours program is supported by the Department of Education and Training through the Refugee Education Support Program READING TO GO MENTORING PROGRAM In partnership with Mallee Family Care and Mildura Primary School Kindly supported by Centre for Multicultural Youth
