Mildura Weekly : Friday March 27 2015 Vol 9 No 20
20 NEWS MILDURA WEEKLY FRIDAY, MARCH 27, 2015 CONGRATULATIONS Frank McCormick... Regular Mildura Weekly read- ers will be well aware of the ster- ling charity fund-raising efforts of former Mildura newsagent Frank McCormick. A long-time friend of the ‘Weekly, Frank was chuffed to tell me this week that he had reached another charity fund-raising milestone. Frank turned 88 this month, and had set his sights on raising $25,000 by his 90th birthday. “I’ve beaten that by a couple of years,” he said, beaming. Now the sprightly octogenarian, who still plays nine holes of golf once a week and enjoys a beer or two with mates, has set a new target – $30,000 by his 90th birthday in 2017. For those not familiar with Frank’s charity work, the former long-time Mildura newsagent has been diligently stamp col- lecting for the benefit of local charities and community groups for more than a decade and a half. Originally hailing from Tal- bot outside Maryborough, and near Ballarat, his first foray into the world of stamp collecting came along when, as a young boy, his love for ETA peanut but- ter enabled him to redeem the jar labels for postage stamps. Moving to Mildura in 1952, the McCormick family, who had previously owned a newsagency, took on a local agency during the 1960s. Frank remained a pil- lar of that business until his re- tirement in his late 60s, all the while amassing quite an envi- able personal stamp collection. Looking to remain active, and with his strong philatelic interest, Frank established the ‘Stamps for Charity’ collection service. He has since raised tens of thousands of dollars in valu- able funds for local community groups and charities. Benefi- ciaries include the Royal Flying Doctor Service, St Vincent de Paul, The Salvation Army and Mallee Family Care. His stamps come from ev- erywhere, from people who have heard of his work and want to support a worthy cause. Frank says the business re- ally took off after an article in the ‘That’s Life’ magazine several years ago. “That let people all over know what I was doing,” he said, “And the stamps have never stopped coming!” Frank first set himself a fund-raising target of $20,000 by his 85th birth- day, and was then set to re- tire. But giving his hobby away proved harder than he expected. And now that he has achieved another milestone, retirement looks even fur- ther away. “I reckon it helps keep me young,” he said this week. So, a new goal has been set, both for fund-raising and retire- ment. “$30,000 by the time I turn 90 sounds good,” he said. He may well be planning what he refers to as his “second retirement,” but a quick recon- naissance of the ‘stamp room’ in his Richardson Grove home is all you need to know that retire- ment once more seems a long way off. • Continued Page 25 Frank puts his stamp on fund-raising for charity email@example.com By Grant Maynard FRIDAY People Grant Maynard Visit www.house.com.au & join our VIP Shop T48 Mildura Central P 03 5021 3877 F 03 5021 3558 ‘Avalon’ ‘Alcazar’ ‘Cotton Bud’ Christopher Vine’s new collections are now available in store.
