24 NEWS MILDURA WEEKLY FRIDAY, MARCH 27, 2015 WHILE old railway stations at Mildura, Red Cliffs and Irymple have been consigned to history, others at Donald, Wycheproof and Birchip are to be given a new lease on life. The three stations will be transformed into thriving community spaces, thanks to $1.2 million in funding from the Andrews La- bor Government’s Community Use of Vacant Rail Buildings Program. The project was announced this week by State Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes, who said refurbishment works were already underway at the old stations, includ- ing structural and interior work and roof re- pairs. “Kitchenettes and accessible toilets will also be installed at each station, along with new services, including power, lighting and water tanks,” she said. “Once completed in June, the revitalised stations will be leased to local community groups for a range of uses.” New use for • ON TRACK FOR SUCCESS: The old Birchip Railway Station, ABOVE and BELOW, once the home of electrical services, will soon become a new hub for community-based events and exhibitions, thanks to a Government grant, with help from the local Lions club, Landcare group and historical society.
