Mildura Weekly : Friday April 24 2015 Vol 9 No 24
16 NEWS MILDURA WEEKLY FRIDAY, APRIL 24, 2015 A COMMUNITY consulta- tion was held Wednesday at Mallee District Aboriginal Services regarding the reloca- tion of Melbourne’s Koorie Heritage Trust from King Street to the Yarra Building in Federation Square. The indigenous art and culture hub will move to its new home in July, after re- ceiving a $2.1million State Government grant. Kalinya Communica- tions Director Jirra Harvey, 32, spoke to community members about the reloca- tion this week, with recom- mendations to be included in a report to the trust’s board. “I am speaking to com- munity members about what they want to see, and what would inspire them to come to Melbourne and have a look,” Jirra said. “The trust has a collection of art and artefacts from across the State, so a lot of community members might have their great-great-grandfather’s shield or their cousin’s painting there. “We want to talk to them about what is important for them to see. Do they want access to the collection? Do they want to see their great- great-grandfather’s shield? And of course they all say yes!” Jirra believes the reloca- tion of the trust will have a positive impact on Sunray- sia’s indigenous community. “We are excited for it to be somewhere that the Mil- dura community can feel welcome,” she said. “They can see their own artists on display, and when they come to Melbourne it can be their first point of call. “As soon as you get off the train you can go to the trust and say hello, and hear about what’s happening in Melbourne for the Koorie community.” Along with the consul- tation, Jirra ran a financial literacy program called My Moola and met with organ- isers of a local youth pro- gram.
