Now situated at 2140 Fifteenth Street, in the heart of Irymple’s main shopping strip, opposite the Irymple post office and close to public transport, Davis Monumental offers everything from the smallest memorial for peoples’ pets, meticulously worked headstones, right up to large, elaborate vaults. Davis Monumental also offers pre-paid arrangements, following the lead of local funeral homes offering pre-paid funeral arrangements. It is something no-one likes to think about, but passing away is inevitable. Just like pre-planning a funeral, Davis Monumental can assist clients to plan for the future, knowing that selecting and paying for a headstone doesn’t become a burden for the rest of their family in their time of loss. While Davis Monumental as a business has been operating since the mid-1980s, the operation can trace its roots right back to the 1930s, when Bruce Davis, now 98, started his stonemason career as a 15-year-old in Adelaide. Moving to Mildura in the late 1930s, Bruce continued his trade in Sunraysia. In 1984, his son, Wayne, left his career as a technical school teacher to continue Bruce’s monumental work. The transition included introducing the Davis Monumental business name, while continuing both the high quality of workmanship and sensitivity in dealing with those who’ve lost loved ones the business is known for. Wayne’s son, Leigh, represents the third generation of the Davis Monumental story, illustrating a passion not just for the stonemason trade, but the interaction with clients. “We’ve been around for more than 30 years as Davis Monumental and our reputation among those we’ve worked with is very good,” Leigh said. “From my point of view I get a great deal of satisfaction knowing people can walk into our office after losing a loved one – they can be in tears, they could be sharing memories and laughing – but when they leave, it’s a bit of closure for the families. “It’s very rewarding to be part of that final step for families.” While the majority of Davis Monumental’s work is producing headstones, the business offers a wide variety of services, including commemorative work, such as the Henderson Park war memorials and Royal Australian Air Force memorials at Davis Monumental on the move Davis Monumental Sales Manager, Leigh Davis. Davis Monumental may have changed locations to new premises in Irymple, but the quality of service guaranteed by the experience of three generations of stonemasons remains the same.
