NEWS 05 FRIDAY, MAY 29, 2015 MILDURAWEEKLY.COM.AU • TIME TO CELEBRATE: Chaffey Trail Reference Group member Bob Walton, Healthy Together Mildura’s Erin Hoye, Mildura Rural City Council’s Julie Jewell and Mildura Councillor Mark Eckel donned period dress this week to help mark the launch of Mildura Day festivities. Sections 248 and 249 of the Local Government Act 1993 re- quire councils fix and pay an an- nual fee based on the Tribunal’s determination. Wentworth Councillors will continue to earn $10,740 a year under the new arrangement – $270 less than the maximum wage al- lowable. Councillors did however agree to increase the Mayor’s wage, with that position to receive an addi- tional $24,030 on top of the stan- dard fee – an increase of $590. Crime Stoppers’ Dob in a Deal- er program, which is being rolled out in regional towns across Vic- toria to aid in the detection and disruption of drugs throughout the state, has already achieved great success in Bendigo, Wodonga, Shepparton and Geelong, with community reports increasing by 234 percent. Crime Stoppers is now turning its focus to Mildura, with a two- week intensive campaign designed to gather confidential community information about local drug deal- ing activity underway. Residents are urged to contact Crime Stoppers for a confidential discussion if they have any infor- mation relating to people who may be bringing harmful drugs into the local community. “We know that drugs like crystal methamphetamine are of serious concern in Mildura and in other regional communities across Victo- ria,” Crime Stoppers Victoria Com- munity Manager Peter Brown said. “Crime Stoppers is committed to working with Victoria Police, the State Government and local resi- dents to gather confidential infor- mation that can help reduce drug supply and drug-related crimes and help keep the community safe. “Local residents often hold the key to information that can help re- duce crime, and the record number of reports generated through the Dob in a Dealer program in Ben- digo, Wodonga, Shepparton and Geelong highlight the real impact residents can have when they speak up against drugs. “We are now asking residents in and around Mildura to take up the fight against drugs and report any information they may have about people making or bringing illicit substances into the region. “Making a report to Crime Stoppers is completely confiden- tial. You will never be identified or called up for a court case, but every piece of information you provide can help solve crimes and reduce supply.” Those with information can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 for a confidential con- versation, report securely online at www.crimestoppersvic.com. au or download the Crime Stop- pers app for iPhone or Android. Crime Stoppers launches ‘Dob in a Dealer’ MILDURA residents young and old are be- ing encouraged to celebrate the region’s rich history this Sunday, with the fourth Mildura Day to be held in honour of the town’s 128th birthday. Getting underway at 11am at the Carn- egie Centre (Deakin Avenue), Mildura Day is the brainchild of the Chaffey Trail Refer- ence Group, and aims to celebrate the sign- ing of an Indenture formalising Mildura as Australia’s first irrigated colony on May 31, 1887. This year’s festivities will focus on the history of Deakin Avenue, while also ac- knowledging the planning work of WB Chaffey, and the impact of former residents CW Langtree and Walter Madden – the men who Langtree and Madden Avenues are named after. Celebrations will also see 10 plaques placed around the district in an effort to honour those individuals and organisa- tions that have helped shape the town. Festivities will get underway at 11am, with a welcome and introduction to take place followed by a special ‘Deakin Avenue historic walk’ led by local historian, and Mildura District Historical Society presi- dent, Glenn Miller. The walk will take participants past iconic locations along Deakin Avenue, with a Lions Club barbecue to follow at 1pm. Mildura Day organisers have spent the majority of this week hosting events in the lead up to official celebrations on Sunday, with a launch taking place on Tuesday. Wednesday saw the launch of the Mer- bein Driving Tour, while yesterday saw the launch of the Red Cliffs Historic Walk and Drive program. Lead-up celebrations will continue to- day from 11am, with Mr Miller to recount stories from the Chaffey years at Rio Vista House alongside three of George Chaffey’s remaining grandchildren, while the Mildura Upland Sister City program will make jaffles at Psyche Pumps from midday tomorrow.
