They may be terrifying, such as Honda’s legendary NSR500 two-stroke, or revolutionary, but have secured their place in motorcycle history. Kawasaki released such a model recently in the form of the Ninja H2R, which is now the most powerful production motorcycle ever made. The closed circuit-only machine boasts an insane 300 horsepower from its supercharged 1000cc four cylinder powerplant, packaged in a cutting edge chassis believed to be less than 200kg in total. To put that power figure into perspective, its closest production rival is BMW’s blisteringly quick S1000RR, which ‘only’ produces 200 horsepower. It even trumps the full-blown race bikes in MotoGP, which are producing about 250 horsepower. Purely a race machine, but available to the public, the H2R doesn’t come with indicators, mirrors or a headlight, but it does come equipped with 17-inch racing slicks. It’s the latest in a long run of motorcycles that have made a splash in road motorcycling history. Here’s a brief, but by no means complete, snapshot of some of the more talked about motorcycles to come out of Japan over the past 50 years. Honda’s CB750, released in the late 1960s, boasted the world’s first mass produced four cylinder engine and is largely credited with coining the term ‘superbike’. After making waves in the 1980s with its GSX-R1100, Suzuki returned to the headlines in the late 1990s when it released its GSX- R1300R, claiming the title as the world’s fastest production motorcycle, It was later crowned the fastest standard production motorcycle of the 20th century. Around the same time as the ‘Gixxer’ started scaring riders around the world in the 1980s, Honda started scaring top-tier grand prix riders with its vicious NSR500 two-stroke. Recognised as the most successful and powerful of the two-stroke GP era, the NSR had taken Australia’s Mick Doohan to five titles during the 1990s and by 2001 had won 130 grands prix and 10 world championships. Yamaha meanwhile sent shockwaves through the street bike world in the late 1990s with its YZF-R1. It not boasted a ballistic motor, but featured a frame and chassis to match. The revolutionary design of the frame has now been copied by almost every Japanese motorcycle manufacturer.
