NEWS 11 FRIDAY, JULY 3, 2015 MILDURAWEEKLY.COM.AU Mildura residents encouraged to get creative MILDURA residents are being asked to help develop the State’s first ‘creative industries strategy,’ with a public workshop to be held at the Mildura Arts Centre on Thursday, July 9, from 10.45am to 12.30pm. Similar workshops will be held across Victoria, with the aim to bring together community members and Creative Victo- ria representatives to discuss ideas on how to grow the State’s arts, culture, screen and design industries, and the contribution they make to Victoria’s economy, liveability and identity. Workshops are free and open to those involved in all aspects of the creative indus- tries, as well as the broader public. “It has been wonderful to see how many Victorians have already taken the opportu- nity to contribute to the development of our first creative industries strategy,” Minister for Creative Industries Martin Foley said. “These new events offer further opportu- nities to get involved. Workshops and events are just one way to contribute to the devel- opment of the strategy. “Interested people can also visit the strategy website to contribute their ideas, see what others are saying, and give feedback – the more creative, bold and ambitious the better. “This process is not only about develop- ing and strengthening Victoria’s creative sec- tors, but also about charting a path for how the creative industries can contribute to the future of our State. “No matter what your connection to the creative industries, we welcome your contri- bution.” More information about the Mildura workshop, or to contribute to the strategy online, is available by visiting www.strategy. creative.vic.gov.au/workshops. FRESH on the heels of the Mildura Week- ly/Tankard Dental ‘Community Hero’ initiative, Mildura residents have now been invited to nominate deserving lo- cals as a 2015 Australian of the Day. The initiative comes from Com- mbank, a partner of the Australian of the Year Awards for more than 35 years. Commbank says the idea is to rec- ognise the exceptional achievements of many Australians. This year, the bank hopes to recognise everyday Aussies who are making a contribution in their own way. CommBank has partnered with eight young photographers from each state and territory, with each of them travelling their respective states to un- earth stories, and photograph the locals who make their contribution unique. Victorian-based photographer Anne Moffatt will embark on her journey around Victoria in the coming months to capture images of deserving locals, and CommBank is asking Mildura resi- dents to nominate a local who deserves to be photographed for the chance to be included in the journey. The stories of the successful nomi- nees will be posted at www.austra- lianoftheday.com.au to form Australia’s greatest national portrait that celebrates who we are, and what we looked like in 2015. Rosie Batty, current Australian of the Year, believes it is important to recognise contributions great and small of all Aus- tralians. “Since my name was called as the Australian of the Year I have been for- tunate enough to travel the country and meet people from all walks of life,” she said. “Our country is made up of some amazing people, not just those we see in the news. It’s these everyday people who make our country extraordinary, and I’m encouraging Mildura residents to nomi- nate a local to be an Australian of the Day.” Anne said she was looking looking forward to uncovering the great stories of Mildura. “I can’t wait to get to know the people of Mildura through hearing and capturing their unique stories,” she said. “If you have noticed someone at your school, sports club, workplace or neigh- bourhood who is making a positive dif- ference, now is the chance to recognise their efforts with a nomination to be- come an Australian of the Day.” To nominate your everyday hero as Australian of the Day, visit www.austra- lianoftheday.com.au. Cardross Progress Association Annual General Meeting THE Cardross Progress Association will host its July monthly meeting in the town’s historic hall on Monday evening from 7.30pm, to be followed by the group’s ‘extremely short’ annual general meet- ing. The committee invites community members, friends and anyone interested in the future of Cardross to attend the meeting that will be followed by a light supper. “It costs just $2 to become a member of the CPA, and your valuable input into suggestions for 2015 will be widely appreciated by the association,” spokesperson Mary Chandler said. “There has always been a strong showing of community pride in Cardross in the past, and its October Spring Show and Scarecrow Spectacular are the big events for the year. “This year the committee would love to see the Scarecrow Spectacular expand, so we are encourag- ing people to get involved. Scarecrows can be made from absolutely anything and it would be fantastic to have more entries from primary schools, kinder- gartens and groups.” From Community Hero, to Aussie of the Day
