Mildura Weekly : Friday July 31 Vol 9 No 38
NEWS 11 FRIDAY, JULY 31, 2015 MILDURAWEEKLY.COM.AU LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Mayor hits back at Cupper criticism Sir, Cr Cupper is correct when saying Mildura Rural City Council’s spon- sorship of Cameron Waters is “sig- nificant” – it is significant for its value for money but it is not signifi- cant in dollar terms. It is minimal in dollar terms as advised by Coun- cil’s CEO. In fact it is dwarfed by the amount of money Council has recently saved in advertising. It is calculated that 7.3million television viewers will watch the four V8 rounds that the agreement covers. There will be over 500,000 spectators at those races. The value of the television coverage of the Wa- ters car is calculated at over $1mil- lion and will see Mildura promoted across the country and the world, not to mention press coverage in papers and magazines. Council, with the support of the State Government, has spent the last three years developing a motor sports strategy that has the potential to earn our community $30million-plus annually over and above the $20million-plus that mo- torsports currently generate for the region. Council will soon release a business case to build a motor rac- ing track for cars and motorbikes and will be seeking to gain financial backing for the complex. Raising the profile of Mildura and its plans through a minimal sponsorship of the class leader, and one of the best young drivers in V8 racing in Australia today, is an amazing op- portunity for Mildura. We should be grateful for the opportunity we have been afforded. The State Government is well aware of Mildura’s motorsport plans as is the Confederation of Motorsport, Mildura Tourism, Mildura Economic Development Board, the Federal Government, the local motor sporting groups and the general public. Spending a minimal amount on a sponsorship that puts Mildura in the spotlight of potential investors in our community that could fund our ambitions rather than expect ratepayers to foot the bill is a very smart business move. It is clear from social media responses that our citizens under- stand the financial benefit of mo- torsport to our community and the tourism industry. I support our staff in their at- tempts to further build on the tens of millions of dollars that motors- port generates and for working so hard to build our tourist and service industries. Cr Glenn Milne Mildura Rural City Council Time to think again about gay ‘yes’ vote Sir, Those who think the recent Irish “Yes” vote in favour of same sex marriage ought to think again. I was in Ireland when the vote was taken. The result was no victo- ry at all. Only 60 percent of people voted; of the 60 percent only 62 percent said “Yes.” That means only 37 percent actually voted “Yes.” And to get that vote an American organisation gave up to $25mil- lion to advance the ‘pro-gay’ cause. As for the US Supreme Court de- cision, the majority decision won because its members forgot their role was to interpret law, not to leg- islate. For people to cry ‘marriage equality’, is deceitful. Marriage can only be unequal biologically, psy- chologically, physically and in oth- er ways. That is why true marriage is so beautiful. It brings together two un-equals to make a new qual- ity bonding the genes of both to create new life. The true equality is in the way both man and woman are made in the image of God and respect each other accordingly. Rev. D Clarnette Rosebud Paedophilia Royal Commission is what is needed Sir, A Sunday night TV program re- cently revealed an insight into cor- ruption at high levels and cover- ups of paedophilia in Britain. The revelations involving MI6, House of Lords and Police were quite convincing in their detail. If those things are happening over there they well could be happening here in Oz. Instead of spending untold millions on a Royal Commission into the unions we should have a Commission inquiry into paedo- philia here at home. We know there have been many instances in Oz where pae- dophilia has been covered up such as in churches and orphanages. Have people in high places of the legal and political system been in- volved in these practices as well? How can people have faith in the British and Australian legal system unless evil practices are fully exposed and the criminals punished? Open the doors to a wide raging inquiry and you’d be surprised how many would come forward with damming informa- tion. Jay Nauss Glen Aplin Mildura events receive State tourism grants TWO well-known Mildura events have shared in nearly $20,000 as part of the State Government’s Country Victoria Events Program following a concerted effort to “showcase community events to visitors from Victoria and be- yond.” Member for Northern Vic- toria Jaclyn Symes said funding aimed to support the staging and marketing of popular events across the State, with the aim to showcase regional Victoria’s tour- ism strengths. The Mildura Goanna Run and the Mildura Writers’ Festival were each granted $2500 as part of the initiative, with the Writers’ Festi- val concluding last weekend fol- lowing a program of workshops, lectures and discussion forums. The Goanna Run will cel- ebrate all aspects of street rod and custom car culture, including art, fashion, automotive design and music, running this year from October 22 to 25. Ms Symes said the Labor Gov- ernment had awarded Country Victoria Events Program grants across the State, encouraging small-scale events to engage lo- cal communities and attract both day and overnight visitors. A total of 19 grants have been awarded, with eight in the North- ern Victoria electorate. “Country Victoria’s impressive calendar of events are a key com- ponent of the State’s $10.9billion regional economy, keeping visitor rates healthy and creating jobs for regional and country Victorians,” Ms Symes said.
