22 NEWS MILDURA WEEKLY FRIDAY, AUGUST 14, 2015 Fran makes a mark • From Page 19 “Looking back, my deci- sion to move to Mildura af- ter 10 years in Bendigo was guided by my previous move from Melbourne,” Fran said. “My time in Bendigo helped me understand the rites of passage in terms of becoming involved in a new commu- nity, and knowing that the community needs time to get to know you.” Since moving to Mildu- ra, Fran has been involved in the North West Law Association and the MASP board, and is a member of Rotary Mildura Deakin. She has also worked in a pro-bono capacity for many commu- nity organisations in Melbourne, Ben- digo and now Mil- dura, with her work history including a range of general commercial, various genres of litigation, and general le- gal work. Fran believes the secret to her success has been the abil- ity to connect with clients, and a focus on customer ser- vice. “It doesn’t matter if you are selling bread rolls, wid- gets or any other products, the legal profession is no dif- ferent, except that the prod- uct we are selling is in our minds,” she said. “It’s in our training, and it’s in our ability to strategise, apply that training and think on our feet. Excellence in cus- tomer service is the key, and there’s no reason why people should settle for anything less.” It’s a belief she has just formalised in a written ‘Cus- tomer Service charter’ to her clients – a self-confessed “risky move” for a young practice juggling the de- mands of multiple clients. “I’m determined and committed to my goal of building a strong legal firm as a real alternative,” Fran said. In her spare time Fran ad- mits to being “a keen sports- woman and avid reader,” and is also a devoted animal lover, with three cats and two dogs making up her extended family. “Oneofmydogsisa failed seeing eye dog, which I’ve had since he was seven- and-a-half weeks old,” she said. “Vegas is 10 now, and a big part of my family.” Her sporting interests in- clude netball, swimming, ath- letics and softball, while also playing football and cricket with her older brother, skate- boarding and roller-skating. She is also an accomplished cyclist, racing competitively in Bendigo and attending the Australian Veterans titles and Australian Masters Games. She said sport and com- munity involvement had proved a good way to deal with the pressures of the job. “There’s a lot of pressure and responsibility involved, and often a lot of hardship and distress that clients bring with them,” Fran said. “It can be difficult over the long-term dealing with your own men- tal health, and as lawyers we have one of the highest anxi- ety and depression rates compared to other professions.” Fran is sup- ported at Medina Legal by four staff members, and high- lighted the work of Jenny Woodward, her conveyancing team leader, in helping her consolidate the Medina Legal brand. “Jenny was the sole direc- tor and operator of Mildura Conveyancing Services for a number of years, and is well- known locally for her com- mitment to her clients and excellence in service,” she said. “I’ve been very fortunate with the staff I have around me, their commitment to the vision of the firm and their devotion to their work.” More information about Medina Legal is available online at www.medinalegal. com.au, or by contacting 4009 0066.
