16 NEWS MILDURA WEEKLY FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 2015 A GERM Detector 3000, an Automatic Homework Machine and a Holographic Phone were just some of the inventions on display at the Mildura West Primary School’s Invention Convention Tuesday. Spending 10 weeks working on an in- novation, 100 Grade Five and Six students unveiled their inventions in the school’s gym, much to the delight of their families, friends, teachers and schoolmates. Dedicating Wednesdays to their proj- ects – as part of the Project Based Learn- ing approach – students researched ideas, designed a presentation booth, applied for a patent and wrote a script for a sales pitch. “They use their learning to pursue a project,” MWPS principal Anne Robinson said. “The PBL is the approach, and the invention is the vehicle.” Mildura West students think outside the box • LEARNING EXPERIENCE: Lara McHugh, 12, with friend Nikisha Dempsey, 19, learns about Phosolar, while RIGHT, Lilli-Maree Cox, 12, hits the right note with a ‘music and the brain’ display.
