Mildura Weekly : Friday September 11 Vol 9 No 44
06 NEWS MILDURA WEEKLY FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2015 ONthefaceofit, aman who’s dedicated three dec- ades to initiating change in indigenous communities, and one of Australia’s most innovative design confer- ences appear to have little in common. But dig a little deeper and Dr David Goddard’s work, which will be discussed at next month’s Cultivator de- sign conference, strikes right to the core of many design principles. Dr Goddard is one of four key speakers at this year’s conference, which will be held on October 23, and was asked to become in- volved due to both his work with indigenous communi- ties, which is a theme of this year’s conference, and his creative approach to solving problems. “Design isn’t just about the artefact or the end prod- uct, it’s about the process,” Cultivator co-founder Mark Haynes said this week. “It’s about the develop- ment of an idea, it’s about problem solving in a strate- gic way, and the way Dr God- dard works with indigenous communities is a clear exam- ple of this way of thinking.” Dr Goddard is a director of Collaborative Systemic Change, a company dedi- cated to changing non-in- digenous peoples’ attitudes and ways of working with indigenous people through a process called Walk To- gether. “Until we as non-indig- enous people step back and allow them to have authority and responsibility for their own future, we will continue to do things to them, and for them, and they won’t be able take that authority and responsibility,” Dr Goddard said. “So I’ve been trying to get into that space between the non-indigenous and indig- enous worlds and find ways for them to ‘walk together’.” Dr Goddard said there are many similarities be- tween the way both indig- enous people and designers think. “One thing about indig- enous people is that they are very holistic in the way they think,” he said. “The notion of design is saying, this is not just about setting objectives or coming up with strategic plans – it’s all of those things, but it’s about thinking holistically.” Dr Goddard’s presenta- tion at Cultivator will in- clude an outline of the Walk Together concept as well as some of the successful ven- tures that have resulted from it. They include an educa- tion program in the Pilbara region of Western Australia in 1997, work in education and alcohol management in the Northern Territory between 2005 and 2012 and a recent venture in Wiluna, in central Western Australia. In addition to his work as a director at Collabora- tive Systemic Change, Dr Goddard has written and published two novels, with another two on the way. Dr Goddard said he was not only looking forward to speaking at the Cultivator design conference, but visit- ing Sunraysia. “One of the things that appealed to me about com- ing to the conference was the sense of community spirit you get in the country that says, if we haven’t got it, then we’ll find a way to sub- stitute for it, so there’s a real feeling of creativity in the country,” he said.
