A talented footballer, Beau became a quadriple- gic three years ago after his spinal cord was crushed while playing for Leon- gatha. Along with coaching the Parrots, Beau works part-time for the AFL, plays wheelchair rugby and is also a motivational speak- er. Recognising the achievements of local ath- letes, coaches and volun- teers, the Northern Mallee Sports Star Awards will be held on Friday, February 12, at Club Da Vinci. Tickets are available at Mallee Sports Assembly (101 Ninth Street) and cost $55 for adults and $27.50 for children Under 12. More information is available by contacting the Mallee Sports Assembly on 5021 3464. Spike Zone volleyball starts tomorrow THE Mallee Sports Assembly officially launched its 2016 calendar of events last Friday, with this year’s batch burst- ing with activities. Five hundred calendars have been distributed to media outlets, busi- nesses and sport and recreation groups throughout the municipalities of Mildura, Swan Hill, Buloke and Gan- nawarra. Aiming to encourage participation and promote physical activity, this year’s calendar features information from 55 sporting clubs. “As much as it’s a promotional tool for our local clubs, it’s also a tool to let people know what is on,” MSA executive officer Carmel Mackay said. “For example the Mildura Dragon Boat Club hold trainings on Sunday – and during the week – and people might want to pop along, that’s the beauty of it. “Clubs can often struggle with money for promotional and marketing strategies, so it’s an exceptional tool.” For the last eight years the popular calendar has been sponsored by the Bendigo Bank, and according to Car- mel, the partnership is a natural fit. “There’s a great synergy between us and the Bendio Bank because we are both about supporting the community, and I think that’s really important,” she said. More information regarding the 2016 MSA Calendar of Events is avail- able by contacting 5021 3464, or by visiting www.malleesportsassembly. org.au.
