Mildura Weekly : Friday March 18 Vol 10 No 19
NEWS 13 FRIDAY, MARCH 18, 2016 MILDURAWEEKLY.COM.AU ORGANISERS of tonight’s fund- raiser to help mother-of-three Janet Pullman, who suffered a burst brain aneurysm earlier this year, have been overwhelmed by the outpour- ing of support from the community. Janet suffered the aneurysm in the early hours of January 31, and was flown to Melbourne for life- saving surgery, where she remains undergoing intensive rehabilitation in hospital for an indefinite period of time. Janet’s husband Ashley has stayed by her side supporting her through the ordeal, while the cou- ple’s three primary school-aged girls, Paige, 6, Harmony, 10, and Macken- zie, 11, have remained in Mildura in the care of extended family. The fund-raising night tonight at the Black Stump at The Setts, has triggered an overwhelming response from the community. The Setts’ Liam Wood donated the venue and staff for the two-hour event as part of his support for the cause. The brainchild of Patrick Bell, Ashley’s brother-in law, the event has been organised by a close-knit group of friends and family, led by Jason Bell and Sally Parsons. The two-hour event, which runs from 6pm, will feature auctions, in- cluding a silent auction, and a raffle, with a host of rare items up for sale, including signed AFL guernseys. The raffle will feature a chance to win a $1000 holiday donated by Flight Centre Mildura’s Jamie Jach- man, and will be drawn at the con- clusion of tonight’s event. A donation box will also be available for those wishing to do- nate money. Auctioneers from local real es- tate agencies have donated their time to conduct tonight’s auctions, which start from 6.30pm. Ashley’s sister Shelly said she was overwhelmed by the response from the community. “I guess I expected some sup- port, but on a much smaller scale. I can’t believe the number of people, including many people we don’t know, ringing up asking us if they can donate or help in any way,” Shelly said. One of the lead organisers, Sally Parsons, believed many Sun- raysia residents could relate to what the Pullman family was go- ing through. “I think what people have con- nected with is the fact that this could happen to any of us, plus it’s a mum and there are children in- volved,” Sally said. “There are so many people that have had an illness in the family and they relate to the fact that Mil- dura is so far away from Melbourne and the hidden costs involved, such as travel costs, plus maintaining a house back here and having to get children to school and other com- mitments.” “I’ve been so impressed with our community, it’s been amazing. I think it reminds us of how much ‘good’ there is in this community.” A range of hampers will also be offered as part of a silent auction. Bids close at 7.45pm. Tickets for tonight’s event will be available at the door from $20 and will include a complimentary beer, wine and nibbles, which have been provided by The Black Stump at the Setts.
