Mildura Weekly : Friday March 18 Vol 10 No 19
NEWS 23 FRIDAY, MARCH 18, 2016 MILDURAWEEKLY.COM.AU the past part of their business The original jarrah floor- boards are also a feature. Like many old buildings, the floorboards had been covered for decades by car- pet, and in this case, green paint. The carpet was removed and much of the green paint also stripped back be- fore clear poly coat was applied. “A lot of the historic elements to the build- ing were hidden behind paint, render and other materials, so we had to do a bit of digging,” Warrick explained. “It was a good find lifting up the carpet and finding the jarrah floor- boards underneath.” The interior and ex- terior doors were also kept, including the front door, and where needed, door furniture matching the art deco style of the building was sourced and brought in. “We felt the front door in particular was important to keep be- cause it was the entry into our building, so it’s symbolic in a way, but it was a bit of a challenge to preserve because it was quite weathered,” Erin said. Warrick and Erin also added to the art deco theme by ensuring any new shelv- ing was appropriately styled, as well as lighting features such as the chandelier in the main entrance. While they completed as much of the work as pos- sible by themselves, such as the painting and exposing both the floorboards and brickwork, Warrick and Erin said finding the right trades- men for the project was a vi- tal step. “One of the biggest chal- lenges was finding the right people that have the passion to build in this style,” War- rick said. “We needed someone who would work with us and not tell us what we should be doing, and we sourced all of our tradesmen locally.” The entire project took just three months to com- plete, but according to War- rick and Erin, it’s just the first step. The pair plans to build an extension to the rear of the build- ing, which in some ways could prove more of a challenge, as they will be essentially starting from nothing rather than pre- serving or retaining ex- isting infrastructure. “The challenge for the extension will be sourcing items that are appropriate for the era. You just can’t buy these items off the shelf any- more,” Erin said. This includes items such as period-correct doors and other features. Despite the chal- lenges they’ve overcome, and those that lie ahead with the extension, War- rick and Erin count the experience as “a reward- ing one.” “We’ve really enjoyed the challenge of working on the building, and we both have a much greater appreciation for the art deco style, and a lot of pride in our building,” they said. DESPITE the prominent location of the Mi- lara building at 67 Deakin Avenue, Warrick and Erin have found it difficult to trace its history and are keen to hear from anyone who may know something. Warrick said that despite poring over countless photographs of Deakin Avenue taken during the 1930s, and speaking to members of the Mildura Historical Society, he and Erin have been unable to dig up any information about their building’s past. “We would have thought, given its loca- tion, that there would have been photos that could have shown signage on the front of the building indicating what it was home to or what it looked like, but we haven’t been able to find anything,” Warrick said. The couple said the photos they have found of Deakin Avenue from that era are taken from Ninth Street, and 67 Deakin is obscured by larger buildings on either side. “We’d love to know more about the his- tory of the building, and get a look at any photographs,” they said.
