Mildura Weekly : Friday March 25 Vol 10 No 20
NEWS 09 FRIDAY, MARCH 25, 2016 MILDURAWEEKLY.COM.AU for a bumper weekend and Sunday, with the winning driver taking away $7000. The thundering Late Models will also run on both nights in what has become an an- nual event for the large capacity, high horse- power category, with $5000 up for grabs for the winning driver. The Legend Cars will be replaced on Sunday night by a competitive field of Street Stocks. Friday night’s action starts at 5pm with hot laps followed by the first race at 6pm. Racing will resume at 6pm Sunday. SUPERCHARGED SHOOTOUT THE Sunraysia Drag Racing Association’s Eas- ter meeting is now one of the longest running meetings of its type in the country, and has been held on the Easter weekend for almost 30 years. This year’s event on Easter Saturday will feature one of the most diverse collections of race cars in its history, with more than 100 entries ranging from junior dragsters through to the headlining Supercharged Outlaws and, for the first time, two jet-powered cars. In addition to the estimated 15 Super- charged Outlaws, which will feature three Sunraysia drivers – Robert McDonald, David Thornton and Mick Taylor – there will be 10 Nostalgia cars, which cover a wide range of car shapes and eras. They include everything from 1956 and 1957 Chevs, a Ford XP, several 1970s era drag cars, a Ford Model T-based racer and four old school ‘gasser’ dragsters. In a bid to provide more racing for specta- tors, organisers have based the event on the ‘Chicago Shootout’ format, which prevents cars being eliminated early in the event. “Under the Chicago Shootout model, we aim the give the crowds more to look at. With the Outlaws for example, unless they break down, we just keep bringing them out all day, so it’s definitely more of a ‘show’ event for the spectators rather than a traditional race event,” SDRA spokesman Kingsley Kuchel said. While there will be plenty of all-out rac- ing across classes including Juniors, Super Sedans, Modifieds, Nostalgia, Supercharged Outlaws and Super Street classes, there will also be several special vehicles and categories. The aforementioned jet cars represent a first for Sunraysia – and will see two of these aircraft jet-powered monsters race head-to- head down the Sunset Strip’s one eight mile. Organisers say while these vehicles are spectacular when mobile, they’re equally spectacular on the start line, shooting mas- sive flames from their rears and deafening the crowd with their jet engines. Another feature will be Mark Della-Zop- pa’s brutal Nissan GTR, which will also fea- ture at Good Friday’s Show and Shine, along with the two jet cars. The newly-completed drag car pumps out 1800 horsepower from its turbo-charged straight-six powerplant, and sends that power to all four wheels, via slick tyres. Sunraysia fans will be among the first to see the car in action during several exhibition runs throughout Saturday’s program. “He’s only running the small engine this weekend. He has plans to attempt a world re- cord later down the track with an even bigger motor, but that thing will be very interesting to see this weekend,” Kingsley said. Despite only running the ‘small engine’ this weekend, the six cylinder GTR will boast more horsepower than the majority of the V8-based Supercharged Outlaws, but benefit from the traction of all-wheel-drive. Qualifying starts from 11am Saturday. Eliminations will begin at 5.30pm. KING OF THE MURRAY THE long-running King of the Murray Aren- across at Mildura’s Olympic Park will get un- der way from 6pm Easter Saturday and has attracted a quality field of riders, including some of the quickest regional riders in south eastern Australia. Gates open at 4.30pm. Racing starts from 6pm and will go into the night, racing under lights. • For a preview on this year’s GTS Transport Mildura 100 Ski Race turn to Page 30 in this week’s Mildura Weekly sport. • ON SONG: The first ever Legend Car Victorian Title will be fought out at Timmis Speedway on Easter Friday night, LEFT.
