SUNRAYSIA OUTDOORS 29 duck hunting 2016 BEFORE firing a shot, hunters are being encouraged to familiarise themselves with the rules governing this year’s Victorian duck hunting season in light of several changes. The most notable are reduced bag limits, and a ban on hunting of the Blue-winged Shoveler. The season opened on Saturday, March 12, and closes on Monday, June 13. Victoria’s peak hunting governing au- thority – the Game Management Authority (GMA) – recommended a reduced bag limit, saying it was necessary to ensure the sustainability of duck populations. And, because of reduced habitat and low numbers, it has introduced a moratorium on hunting of the Blue-winged Shoveler. And, hunters have been war ned, the GMA and partner compliance agencies including Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources, Parks Victoria and Victoria Police will be out in force in 2016 to ensure compliance with hunting and public safety laws, and to ensure the new restrictions are adhered to. What you need to know: • Bag limit: The daily bag limit for the 2016 season is four birds per day. Game ducks that may be hunted in 2016 are Pacific Black Duck, Mountain Duck, Chestnut Teal, Grey Teal, Pink-eared Duck, Wood Duck and Hard head. • Hunting times: Duck hunting is permit- ted from half an hour before sunrise, to half an hour after sunset. • Make sure you have your licences. All hunters, including juniors (12-17 years), must hold a valid Game Licence endorsed to hunt duck. People less than 12-years-old are not permitted to use a firearm and, therefore, are not permitted to hunt or take game. When hunting duck, carry your cur- rent Game Licence endorsed for duck, and your Firearms Licence. • Make sure you can identify your ducks in the field . To maintain your identification skills, watch the GMA’s Duck WISE video on the GMA website or pick up a copy from selected offices listed on the GMA website (www.g ma.vic.gov.au ). • No shooting of non-game species. Non- game species are occasionally shot when mistakenly identified or when flying among game birds. To avoid shooting non-game species: • Positively identify the target as a game species. • Make sure the bird is within your effec- tive shooting skills range. • Single out a bird to the rear or side and do not fire into flocks as this may injure other birds including non-game species. • Hunters should also be alert for Freck- led Duck (appearance in flight is similar to Black Duck) as there is a total ban on taking this threatened species. > Continued Page 31 HUNTED: Duck hunting season closes on June 13.
