20 FEATURE MILDURA WEEKLY FRIDAY, APRIL 15, 2016 pets vets and Understanding your cat Toilet Trouble? Have you ever walked into a room to see your cat peeing in the corner on the carpet? What about stepping in a suspicious puddle or seeing the cat spraying where it shouldn’t be? Here we will discuss the litter box or lack of use of it in a little more detail to find out why your cat or kitten is behaving in this way. Stress/Illness: When cats are stressed they tend to show it. If your cat is showing signs of discomfort at the litter tray, there could be an underlying medical issue. Watch your cat to see if they excessively scratch before and after they go. Listen for panting or hissing noises and finally, check the litter tray and look for unusual looking urine and faeces including colour, amount and looseness. Cats can also get constipation usually from a blockage of cat hair, too many bones or a lack of fibre. If your cat is exhibiting any of the above, it’s best to head off to the vet for a check-up. Cleanliness: Cats like a clean environment. Try to think of your cat as a princess or prince, which of course they are! If your cat is going near the litter tray but not in it, it means the cat has taken a look and decided that the litter tray is not fit for them to do their business. Cats also like to have their own separate litter tray. It may be cheaper to leave the cat litter for a couple of days before a top up, but if your cat wont go in there and starts finding a new location then your cat litter is going to waste anyway. Grab a ‘pooper scooper’ and clean that tray out, also scoop out heavily wet areas twice daily. Princess Lily will soon be happy to go in there again. Marking their territory (Spraying): Have you seen your cat shaking its tail as it backs up in a corner? This is called Spraying. Your cat does this as a way of communication. Male cats are most guilty of this. It is the cat’s way of saying ‘I have been here’ and ‘Keep away’. A cat often does this outside, perhaps against a fence or in a garden, however it can happen inside too, on the walls, curtains or furniture. It can happen when the animal is anxious or perhaps when a new cat has moved in. What to do? De-sex your cat. This can stop the behaviour by as much as 90 percent. Clean/wash the area immediately. A citrus spray is great as cats don’t like this smell. Cats will go again in the same spot if they can smell their previous spray. Ensure the cat is not anxious and show them a new litter tray. Happy Cat? Is your cat a happy cat? Well if Princess Lily rubs up against you, purrs, or jumps on your lap and massages your dressing gown chances are she likes you a lot. Here we will discuss cat behaviours and body language: Purring: Kittens tend to start purring when getting milk from their mother. When a cat purrs it is exhibiting the same contentment. Rolling on the Ground: My cat does this and I often wondered what it meant. As soon as the cat sees me she drops to the ground, rolls around and meows. This means the cat is totally relaxed and trusts the person. It is an act of submission, so apparently I am the boss...sometimes! Rubbing up against you: The cat or kitten is rubbing up against you to leave you their scent. It means they are happy and want to leave their marking on you. It’s the cat’s way of saying ‘you are mine’, after all, we all know cats own us, not the other way round! Wagging, Waving & Thumping their tail: This means your cat is unhappy and doesn’t like what you are doing so you need to stop immediately. A thumping tail can mean your cat is stressed. Massage or Kneading: If your cat is massaging a pillow or perhaps your comfy jumper, it means the cat is showing pleasure. A kitten first learns this movement when feeding from their mother. It is a sign of happiness and also means they identify with you as their mother! ✔ CHICKS (most ages, meat birds available) ✔ PULLET & HENS ✔ FARM FRESH EGGS ✔ HIGH PROTEIN LAYING PELLETS ALL VACCINATED & WORMED ISA BWN’S ISA BWN’S Mildura Sunraysia IsaBrown-Chickens • Clipping • Wa rmwater Hydro Bath • Nail Clipping • Blow Dry Now located at Benetook Vet Clinic and Animal Hospital. 634 Benetook Ave, Mildura DOG & CAT GROOMING For appointments Phone 5022 2455 or Sheryl 0409 158 710 Holistic Therapies from East to West RIVERBEND VETERINARY SERVICE Dr. Deborah Abbenhuys BVSx.
