Whether it’s taking in the Riverland’s renowned food and wine at dining venues throughout the picturesque region or embracing the plethora of activities available on the Murray River, the Riverland has it all. Peppered by a host of beautiful towns, the Riverland has plenty of locations to explore, including Renmark, Paringa, Lyrup, Berri, Monash, Loveday, Glossop, Loxton, Waikerie, Cobdogla and Barmera. For those intent on delving into the Riverland’s culinary delights, the combination of the region’s top quality primary produce, including fresh citrus, stone fruit, nuts, capers and honey, along with a host of roadside stalls, markets and restaurants provide numerous opportunities to get a true ‘taste’ of the Riverland. And why not pick out the perfect wine to suit that special meal from the vast selection of locally-produced wines that the Riverland is famous for? The region now contributes a quarter of Australia’s wine grape production and is home to respected and award-winning wineries including Angrove Wines, Banrock Station, 919 Wines and Berri Estates. Beer drinkers won’t be disappointed either with Renmark’s popular Wilkadene Woolshed Brewery open seven days a week. The full-mash brewery uses mostly filtered rainwater and has a product range that includes everything from Kolsch, India Pale Ale and Coffee Stout to Utopia, a dry apple and pear cider. ‘Foodies’ can also take in the ultimate chocolate experience at Waikerie’s Havenhand Chocolate Factory and Café and taste award-winning hand-crafted chocolate and gift products. For visitors simply intent on touring around to see what the region has to offer, they can explore the Murray River with a cruise on Renmark’s historic Paddlesteamer Industry before visiting the Renmark Riverland Markets. They can then take a quick drive to Waikerie where the Rainmoth Art Gallery showcases stunning exhibitions of art and craft. With hundreds of kilometres of pristine Murray River environment snaking its way through the Riverland, there is a veritable smorgasbord of outdoor activities on offer, including camping, houseboating, swimming, water skiing, bird watching, fishing, sailing, canoeing, windsurfing and jet-skiing. Delve a little deeper though, and visitors will discover a wide variety of national parks and conservation areas, including wetlands, bluebush plains and old growth Mallee country. For those with a passion for their sport, the Riverland has plenty to offer as well, with no less than six golf courses at Waikerie, Morgan, Barmera, Berri, Loxton and Renmark. And if golf is not to your liking, visitors can easily find a game of tennis, lawn bowls and other sports to play. Waikerie’s Benson Park meanwhile boasts fantastic horse riding trails along the scenic riverbanks and through Mallee scrubland, while tourists can also take in a cliff-top walk, complete with lookout and magnificent river views. The Hart Lagoon walking trail meanwhile, with its bird hide, is ideal for bird watching. There’s also Paringa, with its natural beauty, relaxed atmosphere and old-world charm which is well worth a visit, while Berri-Barmera is an ideal location for visitors to spend part of their holidays, exploring more exciting options of the Riverland. Everything in the Riverland is within a short drive, and with all with abundant native wildlife...it’s a photographer’s paradise. A visit to the Riverland can also be a step back in time to follow in the footsteps of the early explorers, Overlanders, pioneers and bushrangers at the many historical attractions, while appreciating the indigenous cultural heritage of the region.
