Mildura Weekly : Friday May 13 Vol 10 No 27
24 sport MILDURA WEEKLY FRIDAY, MAY 13, 2016 THE Mildura Lady Heat basketball team will be boosted by the return of captain Vanessa Power for tomor- row night’s big clash against La Trobe City at the Toyota Hothouse. The 29-year-old has been forced to sit out the opening eight games of the season after she fractured her hand in the Mildura Basketball As- sociation Premier League grand final. Despite not being able to take the court, the shooting guard has played a pivotal role assisting coach Ian San- diman on the bench. Having worked hard to ensure she’s ready for her comeback game, Vanessa said she was looking forward to rejoining her teammates. “I am a little bit nervous, but also excited,” she said. “I felt bad not be- ing able to play. “My hand is fine, I am not worry- ing about that, and I have done a lot of running since I took my cast off. “I was always going to struggle the first couple of games back, be- cause you don’t get that game fitness until you actually start playing. “You can try and practice and scrimmage, but it’s not the same.” Despite Vanessa’s absence, the Lady Heat has experienced a solid start to its 2016 campaign, and is cur- rently sitting third on the ladder with five wins and three losses. “I have been impressed by the younger girls,” Vanessa said. “Geor- gia (Mayne) and Courtney (San- diman) have really stepped up, and having Mikayla (Delcastegne) back in the team has added that maturity. “Bronte (Clark) has done a great job playing point guard and Alli (Gloyd) has also done well.” A mainstay of the Lady Heat for the past 13 seasons, Vanessa believes her absence has opened the door for Mildura’s up-and-coming shooting stars. “So far the scoring distribution has been really even,” she said. “Ev- eryone has contributed on the score- board which is what we need, in- stead of relying on one or two people to put up big numbers. “If we know everyone is contrib- uting it’s so much more of a team ef- fort, and it makes it easier.” Yet to play alongside Mildura’s star import Alli Gloyd, Vanessa is looking forward to forming a part- nership with the University of Ari- zona product. “I usually play really well with the import,” she said. “The last few imports I have been able to develop a ‘dynamic duo’ type partnership. “We play really well together in training, so hopefully that transition sonto the court.” Having secured a 12-point vic- tory last time they played La Trobe in Round Two, Vanessa is hoping her team can experience a similar result tomorrow night. “They play the same as us,” she said. “They have an import and then the rest are running shooting guards. “It’s always really tight with them, it’s anyone’s game and it al- ways seems to come down to the last quarter.” Power back on as Lady Heat looks to zap La Trobe Energy Eagle on the verge of Irymple return STAR full-forward Jason Eagle could be making a wel- come return to Henshilwood Oval this sea- son, after Irymple lodged a clearance for the sharp- shooter on Sun- day. Eagle is cur- rently contract- ed to Geelong Football Netball League side St Al- bans, but has not lined up for the Supersaints in the past three games due to injury. Arguably the best full-forward in country foot- ball, Eagle boot- ed 123 goals in 19 games for the Swallows last sea- son. In Eagle’s ab- sence Irymple have struggled to find an avenue to goal, having only scored a total of 226 points in three games, which is the third lowest in the league. Eagle’s clearance was still pending when the Mildura Weekly went to print. • SOARING EAGLE: Star full-forward Jason Eagle could be making a return to Irymple this season. 1/50 Madden Avenue, Mildura Phone (03) 5021 3883 Mildura Solar are now proudly installing Sapphire Solar 100% Australian Owned solar panels.
