Mildura Weekly : Friday June 3 Vol 10 No 30
NEWS 13 FRIDAY, JUNE 3, 2016 MILDURAWEEKLY.COM.AU MILDURA Rural City Council’s li- brary service has this week placed two of its most significant archives, which reference an important period in Sunraysia’s history, online. The ‘Ted Lawton Collection’ and the ‘Sunbeam Collection’ became digitally accessible on Monday, with residents now able to view more than 13,000 artefacts. Responsible for one the collec- tions was local figure Ted Lawton (dec.) who worked as a laboratory assistant at the Merbein Research Station in 1947, before working as a biological photographic associ- ate for the CSIRO for more than 40 years. He was a founding member of the Mildura Historical Society, life member of the Field Naturalist Club and had a passion for collecting doc- umentation of buildings, important natural events and landscapes in the district. • Continued Page 20 Mildura history goes digital SUNRAYSIA-based Zoe Support Australia serves a critical role in the district, supporting and pro- viding opportunities for young mums in an amazing number of ways, including helping them re- turn to, and complete, education. One of those invaluable roles is providing a source of transport – whether it’s getting to and from school, doctor’s appointments or hospital, or taking their son or daughter to childcare. Up until recently though, the dedicated team at Zoe Sup- port Australia, including execu- tive director and founder, Anne Webster, have been providing this transport service using their own vehicles due to a lack of funding. “We do a lot of transports because teenage mums are often very isolated,” Mrs Webster said. “They are often too young to drive or don’t have the resources to be able to get themselves or their children from point A to point B. “ In a bid to lighten the load and support this worthy service, Markwell’s Auto Group has lent its support, donating the use of a $60,000 Toyota 12-seat Com- muter Bus for the next four years. Sunraysia graphics experts La- ser Signs and Print also jumped on board, donating the highly visible signage for the bus. Mrs Webster said the new vehicle would provide a host of benefits. “Having a van like this makes the load so much lighter for us as an organisation and increases our efficiency enormously,” she said. “There were three of us pro- viding this service, and for me it was doing multiple trips each morning and each afternoon. “Having a van means that we can now transport six mums and six children at the same time. We might have three runs in the morning and then two or three in the afternoon, so this has been long-awaited.” Markwell’s Auto Group dealer principal, Rod Markwell, said the work being done by Zoe Support Australia was not only a valuable service for the community, but a good fit for his business, par- ticularly the push to help young mums return to education. “Our charter as a board is that we try to support children, predominantly through sport or children that are disadvantaged, and we saw this as a great oppor- tunity to give something back to the community,” Mr Markwell said this week. “As a company, we saw that many of these young mums, and we weren’t aware of just how many young mums we have in this district until our involvement with Zoe Support Australia, are in unfortunate situations. “We’re really interested in the idea of getting girls to return to school in some capacity, so if we can assist in some way, at the end of the day, when their chil- dren are five or six-years-old and ready to go to primary school, these girls have got a qualifica- tion which means they’ll be able to enter the workforce instead of falling into the cycle of relying on government benefits.” Mrs Webster said demand for Zoe Support Australia’s services was ever increasing. “For the first couple of months of 2013, we were working with one mum remaining at school and several other mums on a case management basis,” she said. “We’ve now worked with 100 mums and are currently working with 50 to 60, and about 30 are engaged in education with more enrolling all the time.” However Mrs Webster said more support is sorely needed to ensure Zoe Support Australia can continue its work. “We rely on community sup- port, people like Rod Markwell stepping up and seeing the need, hearing about the need and being willing to support us as an or- ganisation. It just makes such an enormous difference.” Helping to drive a worthy cause for our young mums • WORTHY CAUSE: Markwell’s Auto Group principal, Rod Markwell, Zoe Support Australia executive director and founder, Anne Webster, and the latest group of young mums and bubs who’ll benefit from the new Toyota Commuter Bus. www.tankarddental.com.au ROBINVALE Ph: 5026 3536 160 Bromley Rd OUYEN Ph: 5092 1121 Britt St (Hospotal Site) BERRI Ph: 08 8582 2796 11 Crawford Tc e SURGERY Preventative Dental Services Including: • Consultations • Fissure Sealants • Scale and Clean • X-rays *Providing you have already served your waiting periods, are within your annual limit and you hold an eligible level of cover. 155 Langtree Avenue, Mildura | Phone 5022 2933 A/H Emergency 0419 381 125 when available Monday - Tuesday 8am - 7pm, Wednesday - Friday 8am - 6pm, Saturday 9am - 1pm (by appointment) *Providing you have already served your waiting periods, are within your annual limit and you hold an eligible level of cover.
