Distributed FREE every Friday FRIDAY, JulY 1, 2016 WWW.MILDURAWEEKLY.COM.AU VOL 10 #34 Australia’s premier two-wheel desert race comes to town... All hail Hattah SUNRAYSIA has once again become a Mecca for Australia’s off-road motorcycle racing fraternity, with more than 600 riders, the majority from outside the district, converging on the region for this weekend’s massive Penrite Hattah Desert Race. Much more than simply a sporting event, the Hattah Desert Race now holds ‘major event’ status and is arguably Mildura’s biggest winter event, last year generating an estimated $2.5million over three days. The race is arguably the toughest and biggest motorcycle desert race in the country, not only attracting the cream of Australia’s off-road riders, but a host of national media. The show starts with this afternoon’s show and shine/ scrutineering at Red Cliffs’ Quandong Park from 4pm – a first for the event after several years based in Mildura’s main eatery strip in Langtree Avenue. This afternoon’s program will feature every competitor, and their immaculately prepared bikes, as well as trade displays, stalls, with full catering on-site. It will run through until about 8pm, providing plenty of opportunities for Sunraysia residents to drop in. Tomorrow will be dedicated to the Junior Hattah Desert Races from 7.30am and the Senior prologue, which will decide the starting order for Sunday’s gruelling four-hour marathon, which starts at 9am. Mildura Rural City Council Mayor Glenn Milne this week highlighted both the national significance of the event and the economic boost it provides the district. “When entries for the race are booked out in eight and three quarter minutes, that just shows the status this event now holds,” Cr Milne said. “It’s extremely important for Mildura in terms of dollars and the amount of people it brings into town, particularly at this time of the year, in the middle of winter – it’s now probably the biggest event for this district during the winter months. “The other thing is, we can rely on this event. Come rain, hail or sunshine, the event will go ahead and the riders will come, and so too will the spectators.” Cr Milne said that while the event is held over three days, Sunraysia’s economy, particularly the accommodation sector, benefits for a much longer period, with many riders arriving in the district up to two weeks beforehand to acclimatise themselves to the unique Mallee terrain and the conditions. •TurntoPages8and9fora full preview of this year’s event.
