MOTORING 41 FRIDAY, JULY 8, 2016 MILDURAWEEKLY.COM.AU RACING | TIPS | FEATURES | REVIEWS ULL HROTTLE DOYLE CLINCHES MAIDEN GP WIN AUSTRALIAN riders now hold two of the top four places in the Speedway World Championship standings after New South Wales rider Jason Doyle spectacularly clinched his first grand prix victory at Prague two weeks ago. If you count reigning world champion Tai Woffinden, who many Australians have adopted as their own given he spent many of his early years in the country, that’s three riders in the top four with Australian links, with former world champion Chris Holder in third. For Doyle, who is no stranger to Sunraysia speedway fans at Olympic Park, his first grand prix victory, at the Czech grand prix in Prague, was a long time coming, after competing in Europe since 2005. Despite being beaten out of the gates in the final by United States rider Greg Hancock, Doyle ran out wide, as he’d done all night, in search of more dirt and extra drive to slingshot past the American rider, and from there was never headed, storming home to win comfortably. “I can’t believe what has happened. On the last lap, when I was out in front, I was just thinking, ‘come on, keep going’,” Doyle said after his win. “Everyone tells you that when you’re going to win something, you can hear the engine ticking over nicely. In the final, the bike rode perfectly. It’s one of those moments I’ll never forget.” Making his first GP win even sweeter was the fact that Doyle’s family was at the track to experience the win with him – the first time his immediate family had been at one of his European races in a decade. Doyle goes into this weekend’s round of the championship at Principality Stadium, Cardiff, on 42 points, two points behind Holder. Hancock and Woffinden sit at the top of the table on 56 points and 48 points respectively. While the Czech grand prix at Prague will now always be a special place for Doyle, it’s also proven a significant round for other riders in past championships. Eight of the last 12 GP winners at Prague have gone on to be crowned world champion in the same season. Despite the Prague GP’s history, Doyle said he wasn’t getting too swept up in the hype. “I hope I can just get on the rostrum,” he said. “If it feels like this, I hope I can win a lot more.” WINNER: JASON DOYLE DURING HIS DOMESTIC DUTIES IN THE UK THIS YEAR.
