18 FEATURE MILDURA WEEKLY FRIDAY, AUGUST 5, 2016 MIND BODY SOUL Research released for 2016 World Sleep Day revealed 94 percent of Aussies aren’t getting enough quality sleep, with only one in four of us getting eight hours a night, and the average rest time just six-and-a - half hours. Another recent study found that six hours of sleep a night could be just as bad as no sleep as at all. The benefits of sleep are endless, a simple Google search will tell you the thousands of reasons we should be catching more z’s. Sleep can make you more successful at work, happier, improve the condition of your skin, assist in weight loss, improve relationships and boost your mood. Sleep can also increase life expectancy, dramatically reduce the risk of getting ill, improve memory, lower stress, improve diet, reduce the risk of chronic illnesses like heart disease and diabetes and on and on it goes. We all know we should be getting more sleep, but with our crazy busy lifestyles, it can be hard to know how. Get a routine and stick to it Establishing a good evening routine is a great place to start if you are desperate to get more shut eye. Make the bedroom a tech free zone. With our reliance on technology these days, it is vital to remove yourself from devices at least an hour before bed. If you need to wake up at a certain time, buy an alarm clock and leave your phone in the kitchen. Dedicate some time to unwind. Have an activity before bed that doesn’t involve a screen. Read a book, paint your nails, write in a journal, listen to an audiobook, stretch, meditate, jot down tomorrow’s to-do list, colour in, just get off the screen. Go to bed at the same time, every night. Well ok you can relax on the weekend, but during the week structure your schedule sothatyougotobedandwakeupatthe same time every day. Creating a solid body clock routine will help bring on sleep much faster.
