Mildura Weekly : Friday August 12 Vol 10 No 40
NEWS 17 FRIDAY, AUGUST 12, 2016 MILDURAWEEKLY.COM.AU MEMBERS of the Red Cliffs Players are gearing up for arguably the big- gest performance of their careers, with the group’s rendition of ‘You Can’t Take It With You’ to mark a very special milestone. Getting under way tonight, 2016 marks the 60th anniversary of the Red Cliffs Players’ formation, with hundreds of productions – and even more performers – taking to the stage in that time. Current Players have spent the better part of 2016 recreating some of their favourite productions, with performers already taking to the stage to bring ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ to life earlier this year. Following ‘You Can’t Take It With You,’ Players will immediately set their sights on their rendition of ‘Dim- boola’ in November, with the group also recently hosting a special anniversary dinner to mark the achievement. The group’s lat- est production, ‘You Can’t Take It With You,’ is a quirky comedy originally written in the 1930s, and later adapted into a film starring the late, great Jimmy Stewart. Directed by Su- sanne Pendock, the Red Cliffs Players adaptation follows Tony Kirby Jr, vice president of Kirby & Company, and his stenographer, Alice Syca- more. The pair are in love and want to get married, but soon realise that a major problem in doing so is the incompatibility of their respective families. Tony’s father, the company’s owner and president, Anthony P. Kirby, is a cut-throat businessman who doesn’t care who he steps on to earn a dollar – the amount of which is how he measures his worth and the worth of others. Tony’s mother is a pretentious snob, with both parents openly, but quietly, disapproving of the union. Alice’s extended family, on the other hand, are eccentric, and have a ‘do whatever you want to do because you like doing it’ mentality, which was initially fostered by the family patriarch, Alice’s grandfather, Martin Vanderhof, whose house they all live in. With the exception of Alice, they are somewhat blissfully unaware that their lives are unconventional. However, their attitude of open- ness and inclusion has seen them make a number of unconditional friends, many of whom live with the family solely because they came one day, liked what they saw, were welcomed with open arms, and have never left. Tony and Alice want to deal with the incompatibility issue head-on, although they both take differing paths in how to deal with it. Another problem is that A.P. Kirby is working on the biggest deal of his career – cornering the muni- tions market, especially lucrative in the lead up to probable war, that requires a massive land acquisition, which includes Grandpa Vander- hof’s house. Refusing to sell, Grandpa is unaware of who wants to buy his house, while A.P. is unaware that Grandpa is the one holding out on what could ruin his entire plan. An experienced cast of Red Cliffs Players will bring the production to life, including stalwart Douglas Schneider, long-time director Traci Macleod, Ian MacMahon, Adam Decker, Jane MacAllister, Peter Lang, Shay Bruton, Christopher Bennett, Abe Kortekaas, Annabelle South- well, Frank Irvine, Joey Redman and Julia, Sophie and Adele Morrison to name just a few. Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 concession, and are available from Green Goddess Florist (Tenth Street, Mildura), the Cardross Store or online at www.trybooking. com/199281. ‘You Can’t Take It With You’ will officially open tonight from 7.30pm (doors open at 7pm) at the Cardross Hall, with evening performances scheduled for August 13, 18, 19 and 20. A matinee performance is also scheduled for August 14 from 2pm, with tickets to that performance, and the August 18 performance, available at concession prices.
