Feature 19 FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2016 MILDURAWEEKLY.COM.AU foster carers week Sunday 11th September to Saturday 17th September 2016 and knowing I also get to give these kids an experience they might not otherwise have received.” Danielle highlighted the flexibility offered by being a respite carer as well as the fact that carers aren’t ‘locked in’ to foster care simply because they’ve been accredited. “Just because you go through the process, through the training, doesn’t mean you have to commit,” she said. “You can go through the accreditation process and see if itisagoodfit–youjustlearn so much about yourself just by going through this process. “At the end of it, being a respite carer like myself might fit you perfectly, or you might decide to do more.” Mallee Family Care’s team leader for Home Based Care, Kristy Cox, said her organisation currently has 19 active carers, which includes both respite, short-term and long-term carers. Ms Cox said children are brought into care for a variety of reasons, including ‘protective concerns’ for the child, however the over-riding aim of the program is to ultimately reunite children with their parents wherever possible. New-borns through to 18-year- olds are eligible for foster care. RIGHT: The flexibility of foster care allows carers like Danielle Mazza to balance full-time work and respite care. “I absolutely love it”
