Organisers say predict- ed river flows greater than 60,000 megalitres a day when the race was sched- uled to be held (November 12 and 13), means the event will be considered unsafe for participants. In a statement released earlier this week, the Mil- dura Ski Club said they had been closely monitoring the river flows with assistance from the Murray-Darling Ba- sin Authority. “Safety is paramount, and we believe that any flow above 40,000 megalitres a day is unsafe from both a flow perspective and subse- quent debris in the river,” the statement read. “At this point we intend to conduct the event in early 2017, and therefore have indicated this to Ski Racing Australia, who have agreed that they wish this national event to be conducted.” Named after Mildura Ski Club icon Ted Hurley, the Ted Hurley Memorial Classic was introduced in 2014, and has become a popular event on the Ski Racing Australia calendar. Regarded as one of the quickest ski races in the country, the two-day event is held between Wentworth and Apex Park, and attracts teams from across the coun- try. Wentworth Shire Coun- cil Mayor Melisa Hederics said that while it was disap- pointing the event had been delayed, Council was look- ing forward to working with the Mildura Ski Club to en- sure the Classic was a success when it is held in early 2017. “Unfortunately Mother Nature is one of those things that can’t be controlled,” she said. “We certainly look forward to working towards seeing the event take place next year. “Thankfully an event of this nature is one that is always going to draw a big crowd, and we look forward to hosting those keen on- lookers in early 2017.” MILDURA will host an event with a differ- ence next Wednesday, October 26, when the Street Machine Drag Challenge comes to town. A motoring endurance race that aims to test the fastest drag cars in the country over 1500kms and five days of racing, more than 115 participants and their cars, across five events, are expected to descend on Mildura for the event. Described as the toughest street car event this side of the equator, entrants have to drive 1500km over average Aussie roads in five days, and race at five tracks just to finish. In 2014, 40 people were called and asked if they were interested in giving the event a go, with 18 taking part. Almost all of them came back to do it again in 2015, where word of mouth saw the field expand to 50 cars. Check-in and scrutineering for the 2016 event will be held at Calder Park in Mel- bourne the day before the race, before head- ing to Heathcote, Mildura, Swan Hill and back to Calder. Mildura Sunset Strip will host the lo- cal leg of the event next Wednesday. Hot favourite Elvio Gonzalez, with his 1969 Ford Capri drag car, is among the fastest competitors in the country, and will be aiming to raise $10,000 for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance as part of the Challenge. The Alliance aims to give kids living with Cerebral Palsy the chance to receive much needed support and rehabilitation across the country. Elvio, who is also chief mechanic of Blue Toro Racing, says his sponsors have generously donated hours of hard work and sponsorship dollars to help prepare his car for Mildura so that he can reach his target of $10,000. Elvio will be driving his 1969 Ford Capri 1500kms while towing a trailer to prepare for any breakdowns along the way. More information about the event is available online at www.streetmachine. com.au/events/drag-challenge. • RACE READY: Street Machine Drag Challenge competitor Elvio Gonzalez – pictured with his 1969 Ford Capri drag car – will be one of 115 competitors to descend on Mildura for the event next week.
