Mildura Weekly : Friday November 4 Vol 11 No 1
10 year anniversary 3 INTRODUCTION roccisano.com.au | 83 Deakin Avenue, Mildura | 5021 1900 The team at Professionals would like to congratulate the Mildura Weekly on their 10 year anniversary and wish them all the best for the future WHAT A BIG 10 YEARS WE HAVE HAD THE Mildura Weekly was formed by a group of local business people who were, and still are, committed to our region. They are committed to the continued development of the city and its promotion as the best regional centre in the State. This group felt there was a need for an alternate print news source that showcased the positive things happening in the community. After researching other regional centres, it was decided to adopt the successful Bendigo Weekly model of providing a free, full-colour tabloid delivered to homes and businesses across the district. Setting a clear mandate to provide truly local news, views, information and entertainment through this publication, whilst highlighting the success of people and businesses in our community, the Mildura Weekly came into being on Friday, November 10. A staff of eight, covering administration, advertising, production and editorial put the first issue together in the most basic conditions from a rented office space in Orange Avenue. That first 44-page issue, featuring the iconic PS Melbourne on the front page, was home- delivered to 14,000 people, and had a circulation of 19,000. Sunraysia residents embraced the publication and its positive, balanced approach to local reporting and story-telling. The Mildura Weekly grew rapidly in its first 12 months, increasing staff to 13 while growing in size from its 44-page debut to more than 80 pages. The newspaper’s circulation also grew to over 20,000. The desire from local people to read our paper increased, and through the strong support of local government and businesses, we have been able to continually grow our circulation and distribution coverage. Today we are: > The largest circulating local newspaper with 25,500 copies printed each week, with an additional 5955 subscribers to our digital edition. We also now deliver to 16,000 homes and distribute another 9500 papers to strategic locations across the greater Sunraysia area. > The number-one read newspaper in the district according to independent research. > Located at our own modern premises at 424 San Mateo Avenue, combining our office and warehouse at the same address. > A strong advocate for our region, while providing ongoing support to community groups, businesses and individuals throughout the district. The Mildura Weekly has also been at the forefront of a raft of new and creative innovations over the past 10 years, while winning a swag of industry awards. Our innovation achievements and awards include: > Being the first publication to home-deliver the newspaper plastic flat-wrapped in photo biodegradable plastic film. This ensures the paper gets to residents in the best possible condition, unaffected by the elements or rolling, as other publications can be. > Introducing a printed local phone directory with large, easy-to-read listings and categories that is freely delivered across the region. The phone directory has extensive digital and smartphone platforms allowing people access to local business information anytime, anywhere. > Providing a digital edition of the newspaper that has versions for desktop, tablet and smartphones, including an easy-to-use smartphone app. The digital edition has all the colour and information of the printed publication, and also has extra information through photo galleries, embedded video files, direct URL links to advertisers and the ability to easily share pages and articles on social media or via email. > Printing and publishing a full gloss lift-out for the real estate and motoring industries – a first for the region. > Receiving more than 20 industry awards for editorial, photographic and advertising excellence, highlighted by twice winning the VCPA Newspaper of Excellence Award for being the best non-daily regional newspaper in Victoria across all aspects of our publication. > Implementing and successfully conducting the Car & Cash Giveaway that supports local business whilst giving local residents an opportunity to win a car, or a share of $5000 in cash. On each occasion the promotion has been run, it has been hugely successful in generating well in excess of $1.5million in local sales. > Providing advertising, editorial and financial support to numerous community activities, charities, fund-raisers, school groups and sporting clubs. We are proud of our success over the past 10 years, and would like to thank the greater Sunraysia community for embracing our publication, and making us the number-one read newspaper in the region. We look forward to continuing to serve the community for many years to come.
