Taking arts to the next stage MALLEE ICON ON THE MOVE VOLUME 6 ISSUE 17 FEBRUARY 24 2012 TWO thousand and twelve represented a turning point for one of the Mallee’s most iconic events - the Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph - it was the year the event left its traditional home of Ouyen for Merbein. The Mildura Weekly got in touch with former Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett, who was responsible for putting the Ouyen event on the map, to get his thoughts on the move - Mr Kennett gave it his full blessing and was at one stage looking likely to launch the event. Other interesting reads in this issue included an interview with Kerang rail disaster survivors Vicki and Karl Winkel, examining not only the impact of the incident on their lives but how they’ve moved on, as well as an interview with then Dareton police Inspector Kylie Smith. We also celebrated the life of Merbein trucking pioneer and philanthropist Gordon Cupper, who passed away at 83. PACKED WITH NEWS, PEOPLE, ISSUES VOLUME 6 ISSUE 35 JUNE 29 2012 A petrol tanker rollover, the retirement of a long-time Wentworth Shire Councillor and one of the first glimpses inside Mildura’s new-look multimillion dollar arts centre were among a host of events covered in this issue. The petrol tanker rollover, at one of Mildura’s busiest intersections on the corner of Deakin Avenue and Fifteenth Street, effectively shut down one of the major routes in and out of the city and also led to knee-jerk reactions from some, who called for a review of the truck bypass. Meanwhile, long-serving Wentworth Shire councillor Marg Thomson announced she was calling it a day after 13 years on Council, six of which were as mayor. We also spoke to Mildura-based Vietnam veteran Paul Murdoch to get his thoughts on the famous Long Tan Cross, erected in Vietnam in honour of fallen Aussie diggers, ‘coming home’ to be displayed at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
