Mildura Weekly : Friday November 25 Vol 11 No 4
20 NEWS MILDURA WEEKLY FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2016 BUDOU Farms, Minter Magic and Robinvale P-12 College have been successful at the 2016 Rural Water Innovation Awards. An initiative of Southern Rural Water, Goulburn Mur- ray Water, Coliban Water, Melbourne Water, Victorian Water, Victorian Farmers Fed- eration and the Department of Environment and Primary Industries, the awards are con- sidered an opportunity to cel- ebrate and reward excellence in innovative water use in re- gional areas like Sunraysia. All three winners were rec- ognised at the regional level, receiving $500 in cash, while also earning an opportunity to have their businesses and initiatives promoted through Lower Murray Water’s (LMW) marketing channels. Minter Magic, Robinvale P-12 College and Bodou Farms are also now eligible for judging at a gala luncheon presentation on December 2, with LMW customer relations co-ordinator, Leesa Merrett, saying it was sometimes easy for organisations and groups to forget that what they are doing is innovative. “Especially when you are doing it every day,” she said. “Our region is full of incred- ible innovations, and it is im- portant to celebrate this.” Budou Farms – a table grape property located in Merbein South – was award- ed the regional award for Ir- rigation District Water Users. The property uses a probe EC to measure temperature and soil moisture to assist in the irrigation decision-mak- ing process, while also im- proving the accuracy of when and how to irrigate. The practice has so far led to significant water savings, and better management of nutrients – specifically of ni- trates not being leeched. The Surface Water User Award was won by Darren Minter from Minter Magic, who developed and com- missioned a water recycling plant. The property has seen sig- nificant water savings of 65 megalitres a year, while the farm has also seen an increase in crop quality and reduced salinity impacts with the im- provement of water quality from the recycling plant. The farm has also diver- sified, producing asparagus, citrus and almonds. “After experiencing both drought and flood through our family’s five generations of asparagus production, wa- ter security has always been foremost on our minds,” Mr Minter said. “Drainage water impact has been confronting and al- ways a source of is there a way I can re-use this water? “With this in mind, and many years of research, a trial was implemented in 2015. We are extremely happy with the results we are seeing, from reduction of irrigation water requirement to reducing sa- linity impact. “We are gaining limited free trace element supply and most importantly we are drought proofing ourselves.” For the past several years, Robinvale P-12 College has incorporated an environmen- tal awareness program as an integral part of its curriculum, and was recognised regional- ly for its “strong environmen- tal conscience.” “The school has installed four rainwater tanks which we use to irrigate vegetable gardens, fruit orchards and chicken runs,” Robinvale Col- lege P-12 principal, Ana Rees, said. “We also have a working worm farm producing worm castings and fertiliser, which is sold to the local commu- nity and is creating a kitchen garden for students to learn hands-on skills for their pro- duction and preparation of food. “The students have in- cubated and raised many chooks, which supply the community with eggs, while developing approximately 10 gardens of produce which is sold at our school farmers markets, which students help run as well through the kitch- en garden program.” Sunraysia Rural Water Innovation Awards success • WINNING ENTRY: Lower Murray Water State judge Peter Ebner, left, and Minter Magic owner Darren Minter assess Mr Minter’s successful entry in the 2016 Rural Water Innovation Awards Surface Water User Award category.
