Mildura Weekly : Friday February 17 Vol 11 No 15
NEWS 19 FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2017 MILDURAWEEKLY.COM.AU RENEWABLE energy alternatives appear to be the way of the future for Sunraysia. La Trobe University’s Mildura campus is the latest local organisation to move towards a more energy efficient future, having installed solar panels in a bid to help the environ- ment. The power that La Trobe’s solar panels will generate is the equivalent electrical con- sumption of 18 Mildura homes. The campus building reportedly provid- ed an optimum solar site with a north facing roofline and high electrical load during solar generation times. The high temperatures of summer, and plenty of winter sun, could make solar pan- els an excellent resource for the university. The system is expected to generate 131,750kWh a year, averaging 361kWh a day. The solar generation will avoid 151 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year, and approxi- mately 3750 tonnes over the 25-year mini- mum design life. Throughout January, the Mildura campus was busy with installation of an 85kW Solar PV System, which included in- stallation of 327 high quality JA solar panels on the main building roof. The project was managed by Enhar Sus- tainable Energy Solutions and installed by lo- cal solar panel provider Mildura Solar. MILDURA SES volunteers have received “a well- deserved funding boost” thanks to the Victorian Government’s $15million Emergency Services Volun- teer Sustainability Grants program. Hundreds of grant ap- plications for equipment, communications, facility upgrades and community engagement and training were received from across the State, with Mildura SES receiving just over $20,000 for new and replacement equipment, including a generator and kitchen fa- cilities. The Emergency Services Volunteer Sustainability Grants aim to assist emer- gency volunteers in North- ern Victoria for the work they do in keeping the community safe. Applications for the ESVS Grants Program are still open, with eligible emergency volunteers en- couraged to apply. Organ- isations are eligible to apply for multiple grants.
