Mildura Weekly : Friday February 17 Vol 11 No 15
24 FEATURE MILDURA WEEKLY FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2017 health looking after yourself, inside and out professionals Correct your feet, correct your posture When we walk, the first part of the body to hit the ground is our foot, and as it loads from heel to toe, the way it works has a significant impact on the way the rest of the body moves or doesn’t move. This means that when we spend time on our feet, our feet are dictating to the rest of the body how to work. Therefore it is the foot that should be the first point to consider when we begin to experience pain in our day-to-day function, even if that area of pain is not the foot at all. Someone with ‘flat feet’ will often present to the podiatrist rooms complaining of knee or hip pain. This is because when a foot is flattening it causes the leg to twist in and the inside of the knee and the structures around it become irritated. It can also have effects further up the body, including causing the pelvis to tilt forward, the back to sway and the person to exhibit round shoulders. Often the person has been told that they need to stand up straight, but quite simply their feet prevent them doing this. Every time your foot strikes the ground, two to four times your body weight travels through that foot which directs the movement and function for the rest of your body. So if you have pain in any part of your body, your feet may be part of the cause and also part of the solution. Podiatrists can assess and correct your function and reduce or alleviate pain that is not just in the feet. Improving the function in your foot sets up the rest of your body to function the way it is supposed to. As the song tells us, ‘the foot bone is connected to the ankle bone, the ankle bone is connected to the leg bone’....and it couldn’t be more true. Four steps to beautiful feet Feet carry us through life, but it can be easy to neglect your feet during the winter months. Keeping them in top condition throughout the cooler season will have them ready to go when the warmer weather arrives. well-being Remove your polish Over time, polish can wear down your nails and also assist in toe nail fungus if left on for too long. Try to wear a nail polish that helps strengthen your nails and remove polish when you no longer need it. 1 Massage & Mindfulness Can Improve Your Health Lynne Morrison 0407 329 680 For 2017 Course details visit www.massageandrelaxation.com.au Regular Massage provides physical and psychological relief from • Pain • Fatigue • Anxiety Oncology, Palliative Care, Relaxation, Seniors & Remedial Massage.
