Mildura Weekly – 22/11/13 77 www.milduraphonebook.com.au THE heat and pressure will be on at Mildura’s Olympic Park Speed- way tomorrow night, with the Mil- dura Motor Cycle Club to host the first-ever LCR Frames 2013 Oceania Sidecar Championship. The event will feature more than 20 furious heats and three finals, with teams to vie for the honour of being the first to have their name etched on the Oceania trophy. After an excellent opening meeting at Olympic Park last week – where patrons were amazed at the new track infrastructure – specta- tors are again expected to attend in large numbers to watch the only international speedway event to be held in Australia this season. The field is headed by past world champions, including Dar- rin Treloar – now with Blake Cox as passenger – and dual world cham- pion Mick Headland and Paul Wa- ters – who won the World Title in 2010. England will be represented by Mark Cossar/Darryl Whetstone and Mick Cave/Gareth Williams – who are both seasoned campaigners. Both Cossar and Cave have been at Mildura in seasons past, and have already ridden the newly configured Olympic Park. Good things are also expected from New Zealand riders Andrew Buchanan and his wife Philippa Burns, with the pair boasting good experience in Mildura. They have looked good in their midweek practice session, with the combination considered one of the most talented to “come over the ditch.” Competitors from the United States include seven time US Cham- pions Joey Jones/John Glover, who will prove competitive given their Costa Mesa origins. While the Costa Mesa track is less than 200m around, it has pro- duced a number of World Cham- pion Solo riders who quickly adapt once they arrive in Mildura. Australia’s Darrin Treloar – a seven time Australian Champion and arguably the best rider in the sport – will also be in attendance, and has been in splendid form over the last few years. With recent passengers he has done superbly, but will now be invigorated with the addition of Blake Cox – who has amazing pas- senger pedigree. Treloar is thorough with his preparation, and shows amazing skills on the track to always have his machine in such a positive drive situation. The Mick Headland/Paul Wa- ters team are also well skilled, and have great experience around the world, with Mick winning both his World Sidecar Championships overseas on tracks that he had not seen before. The remaining group of Aus- tralians in the field are among the best, with the likes of South Austra- lia’s Mark Plaisted/Brian Anthony and Mark Mitchell/Tom Golding to be in attendance, along with Jason Hardy/Geoff Langdon and Trent and Jesse Headland – who never disappoint the crowd. The representation from NSW – apart from Treloar – includes vir- tually the rest of the Bond and Cox families from the Hunter River. Evergreen Grant Bond has Glenn Cox alongside, while Grant’s son, Hayden, has Glenn’s son Brady as his passenger. All three Coxes are great passen- gers, and Blake’s ride with Darrin Treloar will give Darrin a new lease on life in the sport. The elder Bond/Cox team are well credentialed, as they were podi- um-placed at the last World Cham- pionship, but they will have their sons chipping away at every oppor- tunity to get one over the ‘old fellas.’ The tighter turns at Olympic Park will suit Grant Bond on the throttle, as there is no one better at ‘pole line’ riding as he has shown over the years. Queensland has Brodie Cohen/ Josh Sinnott and Dylan Blain/Rob Gottardi in the meeting, with both teams young and hungry. The new look corners at Olym- pic Park will provide some spectac- ular interest to all riders, and don’t be surprised to see some spectacu- lar action from either Queensland pair during the heats as they search for a place in the finals. One can never discount the ef- forts of the two local teams in the field, with either Byren Gates/Mick O’Loughlin or Warren Monson/ Matt Morgan capable of matching it with the best. Gates and O’Loughlin have had some practice time prior to the meeting, while Monson/Morgan will come in unsighted. Patrons are reminded that gates will open at 3pm for official prac- tice, with a full junior program to entertain patrons following practice. A Victorian Junior Solo and Sidecar Title event will also be held, with rider presentation to begin at 7.15pm – racing to start at 7.30pm. Some grandstand accommoda- tion is available, and patrons are reminded that they will be able to circumnavigate the track at the end of each round of Sidecar heats. Full catering is available, with no BYO by law.
