Mildura Weekly – 06/12/13 3 www.milduraphonebook.com.au By BEN PISCIONERI IT’S been a climatic rollercoaster ride for Sunraysia residents this week, going from more than 40 degrees and total fire ban on Monday, to more than a month’s worth of rain in 24 hours two days later. While the district received gentle rain overnight Tuesday, the heavens opened about 8am Wednesday, dumping more than 14mm of rain on the district in an hour, bringing the official rain gauge for the 24 hours to 9am to 24.2mm. An additional 12.8mm of rain fell to 1.30pm Wednesday, mean- ing more than 37mm of rain in less than 24 hours, well over 10mm more than the monthly av- erage for December. There were reports of well over 50mm from other areas in the dis- trict. This week’s rain put Mildura Rural City Council’s upgraded $11million storm water drainage system under its first real test since work was completed, triggering mixed reactions from business owners in and around the flood prone areas in Seventh Street. Many business owners in Sev- enth Street said that while the flood water did dissipate quicker than it has in the past, they were surprised at the level of flooding that still occurred. Water covered the entire road- way in parts of Seventh Street, particularly the stretch in front of Quick-Fix Motorcycles and Brett Wright Wholesale, where water covered most of the nature strip. Dolfin Drive was another trouble spot, with water covering large sections of roadway, while water also pooled in Hynes Court. Despite the flooding, there haven’t been any reports of prop- erty damage as a result of Wednes- day’s downpour. However many business own- ers once again expressed anger at motorists who failed to slow or who drove irresponsibly, sending small waves of water towards their shopfronts. One witness reported a driver in a utility doing a burnout in the midst of the flooding, directly in front of several businesses. Council’s general manager De- velopment, Garry Healy, said that overall, the new drainage system worked well, particularly along the length of Etiwanda Avenue and areas near the intersection with Ninth Street. Mr Healy said Council had 30 staff monitoring the district’s usual trouble spots for most of Wednesday morning. “There was some obvious sur- face flooding in and around the district as you might expect given the intensity of the rain, but many of our major trouble spots that normally would have flooded in that type of storm fared well,” he said. Mr Healy said residential ar- eas, including Plane Tree Drive, off Fourteenth Street, and Settlers Drive in Mildura South, which have been regular hot spots for flooding, also managed signifi- cantly better. “Previously they would have been inundated, with potentially some properties flooded,” he said. In reference to concerns about the level of standing water in parts of Seventh Street and in Hynes Court, despite the drainage works, Mr Healy said it was always un- derstood that during unusually intense rainfall events there would be minor flooding. “That (standing water in Sev- enth Street) was while there was significant water in the Etiwanda Drain. Seventh Street will hold some water, but as soon as the load on the Etiwanda Drain drops, water from Seventh Street will drain back into it,” he said. Mr Healy said this issue would be improved once the second stage of storm water drainage works in the area were completed, which would address the area between Benetook and Etiwanda Avenues. “We’d always envisaged we would need additional pipes to service that area, however we’ve needed to get an easement on pri- vate land to get through to the Eti- wanda Wetlands,” he said. Mr Healy said this could get under way in the next financial year.
